Lock and unlock
Typically I can just put my key in the door, lock it and re unlock it and it resets.

Year: pair of 99s
Model: Grand Cherokee
Engine: 4.0
The V8's are the Dodge 318 (5.2) and the 360 (5.9) which are proven rugged motors. The newer 4.7 is an OHC aluminum head motor that has yet to be proven for longevity. JMHO. The 4.0 was originally an AMC engine but was modified by Chrysler for better performance with fuel injection.
Even the AMC 304, 360, and 390s are not bad mills and are very capable engines. Interesting side note on these engines, when Chrysler bought AMC, the adapted all the AMC head/port configurations into their V8 cylinder heads, added a roller cam, and this is what created the 5.2 and 5.9 Magnum engines.
I'll be using some of the advice in this thread to get my '96 GC fired up. Previous owners were in a wreck with it and I'll be playing with the PCM/ASR relationship to get it fired back up.

I have 256 k on the same engine with revuilds on essentials. My only problem with the engine are leaks and worn parts. Running strong. Maintenance is the issue

Old fart with a wrench
One of the main reasons for the longevity of the 4.0 is the fact that it has 7 main bearings as opposed to 4 on most other inline 6 cylinder engines that came before it. That means there is only one crank throw between mains so the crankshaft doesn't flex as much. Add that to the fact that inline design is so dynamically balanced that it doesn't need external balancing like a V engine does. Before 99, these engines produced max torque at 3000 rpm and would "pull stumps" as my dad used to say. In 99, they changed the cam profile to provide max torque at 4000 to help clean up emissions.
The eventual demise of the engine had to do with meeting emission standards more than anything else.

Check the transfer case linkage, especially the pivot bushing on the ends of the torque shaft. These bushing come out of their sockets and cause looseness in the linkage. You can get it to shift sometimes if you shift it "briskly" from 4 full time to 2wd on the roll.

Help with ECU PCM Computer Part Number
Hi. I'm new here. I have a Grand Cherokee Limited 97. The computer got damaged, and I need to replace it. I've added the stiker of my bad computer.
How I should search the part number? Shoud match the entire number P56041 418AB? Or will be enough just with the first part P56041?
Thanks.

Is my pcm bad?
1997 Grand Cherokee ltd 5.2 liter V8 2wd - little hard to start one AM, fine driving home. Next AM engine turns over but no start. LED odometer is on (~118k miles), indicator lights on, but no gauges work. Gas light is on but I know that the tank is full. No fire from coil to distributor when engine turning over. Unable to connect to the pcm using odometer reset button/ key switch method, or OBDI key on-off-on-off-on methods. My OBDII code reader is unable to connect with computer, and cannot read the VIN. The pcm physically looks good, connections clean & intact. No blown fuses. I think the pcm is bad; Cheapest replacement around here is Autozone Cordone for $140 plus $70 core. Cordone reportedly does not require reprogram and is plug & play. Info on here has me questioning myself - I don't want to spend the money if it won't fix the problem. No, I do not have a manual. Sound like the pcm is bad to you?.Your thoughts and advice is appreciated!

Ignition coil help
Hey guys. new to this forum. I have a 1997 Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 liter manual transmission. and I bought it not running, the previous owner said the ignition coil went out. I purchased a new one and the plug isn't fitting the new coil. But the 1998 coil looks like the plug matches. Has anyone ran into this ?

i have a 97 jeep cherokee 4.0L high output 4wd and i have had it for about 2 years and about 6 months ago it started running differently. now it will run for about 8-10 miles or so fine and then cut off. but if you let it sit for about 20-30 min it will crank right back up and run fine. i have changed both fuel pumps and the distributor and it still does it. anyone know what to do?
