Daughters drive a 97 Grand Cherokee Ltd. 125,000 miles
Last year we put in four fuel pumps before one took.
Two were free from Dealer, one was free from NAPA.
Biggest cost were the tows to the garage.
Did you check the tank for sludge when the pump was replaced.
We went through a lot of electrical system questions and challenges. None ever found. Tests were yielding low voltage from the pump.
I believe they were all bad pumps. Parts manager at dealership admitted to replacing a lot of pumps around that time.
Good luck

had same problem in my 95 grand cherokee 2 easy things to fix first is the coil.....its located right under the distributor......replace it and move it to the other side of the mount they are located to close to the motor and get hot and short out.......dont go with msd its a waste of money and no power gain for twice as much....the second prob. i had was the fuel filter...both these probs. were easy to fix and cheap but had the same symptoms......either crank and crank and no start or driving and as soon as you were a few miles down the road itd stahl....hope this helps

Default complete frustration

My 97 is doing the exact same thing, took it to my mech. and they put in a new crank sensor, car ran for about a week then started dying again. finally had to have it towed back to the mech, they put in a new alternator and cam position sensor, they got it to start then it died again and now will not start. after my car being in the shop for a week I got a call saying they are refunding my money and can not get it to start. what do I do?

I am having a similar problem with a friends 97 318 automatic. She drove it fine the other day, came home and parked it. The next morning all it would do is turn over but no start. Changed the fuel pump but no luck. As a side, the gas guage doesn't seem to be functioning either. Any ideas?

[QUOTE=seed;233309]That is a ridiculous statement.
I agree! Mine is also a 97 V8 and her engine is still running, even if there's something wrong she's never let me down however I have had lately problems with steering box, and fuel injection.
I'd say Grand Cherokees are not the problem, the problem is the mechanic dudes for Cherokees! So hard to find the right ones! Preventive mechanics does not exist for Cherokees unless something really breaks, and can't let your tires roll anymore so that one can figure what the cause is and fix it properly.

97 grand Cherokee. Accidently tripped burglar alarm 3 weeks ago, now it will start but shuts down in about 30 seconds. What is proper procedure for resetting burglar alarm?

I have replaced fuel pump, ignition switch, crank sensor, coil, and the half of my hair I pulled out.

This is sort-of out of the box, but try loosening the cover screws on the PCM. Guys have had problems with the screws being too long and shorting out the board. As it heats up, they expand and touch the grounded metal.

Also, there seems to be a problem with understanding the function of the ASD relay. The relay, at rest, is an open circuit. The PCM needs a CPS signal to activate it to turn on the injectors and ignition. The engine will crank until the battery is flat, but without the ASD hot, will not start. You can check the relay itself by swapping it with any other relay of the same size in the box, I suggest a headlight relay. (You can drive without a headlight) The CPS tells the PCM that the crankshaft is actually turning.

90% of all problems with Jeep engines are electrical or cooling. The V8's are the Dodge 318 (5.2) and the 360 (5.9) which are proven rugged motors. The newer 4.7 is an OHC aluminum head motor that has yet to be proven for longevity. JMHO. The 4.0 was originally an AMC engine but was modified by Chrysler for better performance with fuel injection. It's still a grey-haired old warrior that just keeps moving on. There was a problem with the cylinder heads in 99-01 because Chrysler enlarged the valve ports for better airflow resulting in heads cracking. That was fixed in 02. The 4.0 was retired in 05 because it was too long, too tall, and too heavy to fit in the newer body styles and was replaced by the 3.7 V6. RIP.

Thank you Dave for the reply and suggestions. I have heard this model was bad about PCM over heating so I put some 3/4" heater hose spacers between PCM and the firewall and used 1" inch longer mounting bolts to allow more air between PCM and firewall. Hoping to reduce heat on PCM. I still think problem started when I accidently engaged burglar alarm. I have tried every thing I can think of to reset it, but I am not sure of proper reset procedure. Tried twice unhooking negative cable on battery overnight to allow it to reset, with no luck. Jeep belongs to my cousin, of course she doesn't have owner's manual.

Find the anti theft module.
Viper perhaps? It'll have a model number on the housing.

It's built into the PCM. It may require a scan tool and dealer ID number to reset the anti-theft function.
