Default 1997 jeep grand cherokee problems?

I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 5.2 L V8. I had the fuel pump replaced at 107,000. 2 weeks later it died. They said it was a relay or alternator or battery, SO I got a new alternator and Battery, still wouldn't start. Got a new relay. It started but dies 4 miles down the road. Needless to say I have been without a vehicle for 2 weeks. Does anyone have any ideas of what it could be?

I have 2 Jeep grand cherokee's and they have been nothing but problems for me.

sounds like its time to buy a manual. Is the alternator getting adaquate power? alternator's need 12 volts to operate. thats the difference between a generator and a alternator. I would first check to make sure the alternator is rec. 12 volts ("A" positive wire),and pushing out somewhere around 13 volts ("B" positive wire). Just because you put in a new alternator does not mean the new one is not working properly either. I stay away from remanafactured alternators and starters from parts store's I Have had too many similar problems.
Find a reputable electrical repair shop that rebuilds them,it is much cheaper to. Goodluck.

When you say dont start. What do you mean?? No power at all? or will crank and no start?? Check fuel filter. Just went through same problem.

It could be the throttle position sensor or PCM, you need to use a decent electric tester and check the conection points at the throttle body, you should have between 5.1-5.2 volts passing. If you dont look at the PCM closer, you cant really test it, just replace it.

i have a 97 jeep cherokee 4.0L high output 4wd and i have had it for about 2 years and about 6 months ago it started running differently. now it will run for about 8-10 miles or so fine and then cut off. but if you let it sit for about 20-30 min it will crank right back up and run fine. i have changed both fuel pumps and the distributor and it still does it. anyone know what to do?

Default V8

Unfortunately, I have heard that the Jeep V8 engines are
pretty crappy and like 98% of those engines have been replaced.

I have the I-6 and has 112,000 miles on it and never any problems.

Default Shutdown

THe Jeep Grand Cherokees have a "ASD" relay. ASD means
Automatic shutdown.. that means the PCM is detecting something like an engine overtemp that is causing the PCM
to enable the ASD relay thereby causing the engine to stop running.

There are ZJ factory service manuals on E-bay that are well worth what is being asked for them ($30-$50).

That is a ridiculous statement.

The ASD will not activate unless the PCM is not receiving a crank signal

You are correct in the fact the ASD needs a "BAD" signal to cause a shutdown, and you need it to turn over for this to happen. Also though sometimes for different codes, the ASD will cause a continuing shutdown, not alllowing for start from lack of fuel; this is due to the ASD's main function is fuel cut off.

an AMC 304 in a CJ is a questionable engine yes, but in reflection to comparable engines on the market for the use, the hold thier own.

But more importantly we are discussing Cherokees; I have a 5.2 L 318, one of the best all round engines in U.S. auto manufacturing. I have an older truck with the same 318 and have 250,000 miles; and only changed the water-pump, fuel-pump, stop light switch, and brakes. sounds pretty reliable not crappy.

Most cheroke issues tend to be electrical, a bad sensor or short somewhere.

Yes,the ASD's main function is to shut down the fuel pump and coil in the event of an accident from lack of crank signal via the PCM. The only sensors related that i know of are the crank and the cam positioning sensors, which obviously have to do with crank signal, right? Unless the fuse keeps blowing then thats a whole different story.

If you are referring to the AMC V8's I stand mute.
If on the other hand you're referring to the Chrysler V8's used in the ZJ and WJ models I beg to differ. My '97 ZJ w/5.2L V8 has 180,000+ miles and except for valve cover gaskets, a water pump, a serpentine belt, and tune-ups, has not needed a single engine repair. My '04 WJ w/4.7 V8 has 87,000+ miles and except for a tune-up has not needed any engine repairs at all since purchased new and still runs great.
So from my experience at least, your blanket statement is totally false.

I hear the 5.9s are pretty tough too...Although they need to be ran on premium fuel...

Cool

Don't run around in circles.....If you turn the ignition key on and the battery light on the dash comes on(that is good) if you start the car and the light goes out(that is good) When the battery light goes out it is an inditcation that the alternator is recieving the 12 volt reference signal needed the start charging. Put a meter on the battery temerinals and look for anything over 13 volts and under 14.6 volts. Sometine the cable lead from the alternator to the battery fails. Now when you say it dies , what do you mean? crank no start, no crank or no anything.
Oh and by the way, I agree with ol'Blue my 5.9L cherokee has 189000 miles on it and still has most of it orginal parts(except water pump) it is a real kick #! engine. I love how dependable it is.
