Default 1996 JGCL 4.0/6cyl Tranmission Identification

I have a '96 JGC Laredo, 4.0L Inline 6 cylinder. I am trying to identify the transmission type I have. I now from research and my Haynes manual it should be the 42RE or the 42RH. I know these are only slightly different but how do I find out for sure.

I bought this used so all I have is the number off the tranny:

PK5211842424882221

Thanks,
greg

93.5 to 98 zj's with a 4.0 have the 42re....they never put the 42rh in grands..just 42re,44re,46re,46rh and the rare aw4 and ax-15 (both in early 93)

Wow thanks Seed, that is what I suspected from the manual.

Now just to be annoying and to learn something more, how can you tell from looking at the tranny? Could I call the Jeep dealer with that code above? I am a computer guy and a hack mechanic but I thought there would an easy way to inspect the tranny and get the model from it. Once I got the code I though that would tell me or I could find a way to decode that?

yea,i think they just put that in the haynes because it's so close to the 46rh...i'll tell you the best thing to do,if you go to jeep.com and go to the "contact us" section you can ask them for a build sheet on your jeep by giving the vin...it's pretty cool and they normally get right back to you with it....yes the dealer can decode that for you, they can also get you a build sheet
