1996 grand cherokee limited rear end-help!!
Guys
I am new to this forum and there is lot of great info here.
I have a slight problem with the rear end in my 96 grand cherokee limited, 5.2. I have hand grainaded the rear end due to a leaking axle seal that was not fixed properly. I need to know what the ratio is, there is not a tag on the diff cover. Is there anyway to decode these by the vin #?
Any help would be wounderful, thanks
Brian

Rear axles and ratios in ZJs:
93-98 4.0 w/o tow package; d35 3.55
93-98 4.0 w/ tow package; d35 3.73
93-95 5.2; d35 3.73 (some early, non-tow ZJs have 3.55s)
96-98 5.2; d44a 3.73
98 5.9; d44a 3.73
olblue,you got a 97 5.2 with a D35?...that must be one rare ZJ

Holy Moly! You mean I had an aluminum center section D44 and didn't even know it? I assume that's what D44a means, right? I am damaged goods.

yes sir, that is most certainly what you should have. grand cherokee D35's will have an oval shape diff cover with a rubber drain plug and the 44A cover is beefier looking with a metal drain plug(i'll see if i can find a pic),which does yours look like?
