1995 grand cherokee 4x4/transfer case issue
Hey guys! Just bought my first Jeep!! Its a 1995 Grand Cherokee Limited, white with gold trim and gold trimmed snowflake wheels (my favorite color combo). it has the 5.2L V8 which runs strong. got it for $2000. It has the 249 transfer case (quadra-trac, ugh), which works fine, but I think theres a problem with the linkage. You can shift it into 4lo and it will engage, but when you try to shift back into 4 full time, it wont engage, it shifts into neutral and gets stuck there. you have to crawl underneath and manually move the lever on the t-case. does the linkage just need to be adjusted and tightened? is there some kind of bushings that wear out?

When shifting back into 4hi, stop the vehicle and put the transmission in neutral, then it should shift into 4hi with no problem.

Ok I THINK I found the problem. I went underneath and checked it out today. On the little lever/fulcrum piece where the rod from the shifter and the rod to the t-case connect to, is it supposed to pop into that plate bolted to the side of the tranny? Mine is loose and moves side to side about 1/2". I will go get a picture to show the pieces I'm talking about.

You really should start a seperate thread for this. No reason to revive a 4 year old thread that is unrelated.
Your reporting very general symptoms. It could be the battery, alternator, grounds, starter, ecm/pcm, a bad tranny could possibly cause your shifting issues, but unlikely it would affect starting conditions.
More info, and more research will help everyone here. Get some more info for us, and we all are more than happy to help. But with the info provided, it could be many things.
Try to find out if you have air, fuel, spark, and your battery and alternator work. Then check any engine codes you might have.
Then start a new thread.
