Hello! I have a brand new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7L. Its MPG is published as 14 city and 20 highway. With only 1000 miles on it, my current combined average fuel economy is 12. Is that normal? Will it get better over time?

You have close to 400 hundred horsepower and you're complaining about 12mpg? I have maybe 150 horsepower and get the same mileage. I would say you're luckier than I am.

Those EPA mpg ratings are just estimated. Combined can be lower due to he how driver drives. Maybe lay off the peddle some. Don't hit so many red lights.

Wait a second...you mean to tell me that my 17 year old xj gets better mileage than your brand new car? I'm getting 16mpg's on 35's and lifted with gears, all street driving... I thought the whole point of CAFE standards was to improve mileage, LMAO, what a racket

It's all about EPA estimates. That's what the government looks at I believe. What people actually get is their own problem

Yeah, I think the last time a car got an ACTUAL 40 mpg was the Volks Beetle, and even then you had to drive sensibly. The REAL beetle, not the remake!

The problem is not individual's justification of the gas mileage based on the amount of engine power. It is about the claim of the mileage to expect at least 14 miles to the gallon and it does not look to be true with my vehicle, at least not at this time. It means that either it takes time for the engine to break in and the gas mileage will get better over time, or the claim is false, or there is something wrong with my vehicle. That is exactly what I am trying to find out. My question was if the lower than claimed gas mileage is something to be expected or not. I do not see anything wrong with my concern.

That Hemi will get 15 mpg. Problem is you'll have to throw on another hour for just about every trip you take anywhere under 25 miles away. Seriously though you will have to drive slow and easy, phase out people behind you and stay in the right lane

It's the amount of miles that you drive between filling ups divided by the amount of gas you have to put in to fill up the tank. But I use an app that keeps track of all my stats. I just feed it with all the info at every event. As of current, I already filled up 3 times since I purchased the Jeep. The app shows me the average gas mileage for the period of my 1000 miles which, again, is an easy calculation when you keep track of all the miles and gallons at the pump.

Don't get me wrong: I looooove my new Grand Cherokee; I love it! I just hoped that its mileage would not be below the lower end. I would be happy if it only could stay at 14.

My brother bought a Dodge Ram with the hemi because he thought it better than the Chevys he always drove. He also had poor mileage and was told by the dealer it would improve over time. It didn't and after replacing both exhaust manifolds and problems with the brakes, he traded it in on a Silverado! Just saying.
