Did you keep the 242 in the black one i.e. 242 with an AX15?

Nope it has the 231. I might be mis-remembering but I feel like I remember reading that it wasn't recommended to use an ax15/242 combo, plus the ax15/231 was already hooked together. It is an intriguing thought though, I should look that up again. The 242 is in the garage still hooked to the aw4 that I fear has a bad front pump. Another thing to look into.

I changed the engine and transmission oil today, as well as the air filter. The starter is acting up, so I'm planning on fixing that when I can get my spare from back home, if it's still good.
To explain the pic below, the oil filter was on quite tight and the crappy tool I bought years ago (and rarely use for this reason) didn't work, it just cut holes in the filter. So I made a make-shift strap wrench (mine is at work). I used a piece of strap tied together, looped around a 1/2" extension, and put a 02 sensor socket around it and used a ratchet. It worked quite nicely.

Installed the rebuilt front driveshaft and finished my first draft of the transfer case shifter linkage. It needs tweaking and prettying up but it works for now. I wanted it to work, even if it's not perfect because I drove home today, 450 miles, I my parents for Christmas. Made it just fine, however my starter is acting up more and more. An my speedo is off about 10mph fast.
I got another starter today, I'll install that this week. I also have no horn and the airbag light is on the dash, so I took the clock spring of my red jeep that is in storage and installed it in the black jeep... Nothing changed. The airbag light did go off for a second but came back on.
I am also working on my washer pumps, but it's not a priority at the moment like the squealing/intermittent sometimes working starter.

Discovered why the clock spring switch didn't work... I didn't plug in the back of it. I realized that and was able to pop the column cover off and plug the two plugs in and like magic, I have a horn and the airbag light is gone.
I also got it inspected.
The. I took it t my parents cabin to shoot a bit and drive around the fields with my nephews and broke down out there. Pretty sure it's the cps, as my gauges stopped working until I unplugged it, then they came back. So I let it sit and came back a few hours later after Christmas Eve festivities and it started right up and I drove it the 20 mins back home. I have a cps, I'll probably change that when I can find dry ground and a longer extension. Here are a couple pictures, I meant to take more but forgot.

Black jeep is giving me all sorts of issues. replaced the cps, starter, serpentine belt, and idler pulley bolt (the long one that adjusts tension). Serpentine belt fixed most of the noise on start up, but the starter acted the same as the old one, meaning the bendix/gear didn't engage the flywheel sometimes. Which is dumb. I put the old one back on, didn't have an an issue the next 50 times i started it over the day. I also cleaned the IAC or TPS, the one with the plunger, which seemed to help although I never had any idling issues.
So I drove it about 15 miles away, picked up some stuff, and came back and several times while driving it shut off without warning, check engine light blipped on, then off. I re-started by dropping the clutch and continuing on. Seemed to want to stay running if I kept up on the gas, but that could be my imagination. It tried to shut off probably 40 times in 5 miles. I swapped the ASD relay when I got back to my parents, but didn't have time to do another driving test.
Packed up and left the jeep there and borrowed my parents car to drive the 450 miles home. Now I get to diagnose from afar. Hope to bring some parts home to fix it soon.
I have some guesses, My dad might be able to tinker on it while I'm away.

Remembered I had the intake from my parts jeep so I got that out and took the sensors off, cleaned them up and bagged them. I also bagged up some relays for the ASD. Bought a Napa ignition coil and CPS to replace the autozone cps I put in, I'm not sure it's working as all symptoms still point to faulty cps. I also don't really like az products but it was all that was available at the time, it just seems to have spread out the time between shutting off. I hope I don't have to replace the distributor or 02 sensors which have similar symptoms.
I'll be heading home to work on it in a few days so more updates then.

Drive home for New Years and worked on the jeep. Replaced the ignition coil and the CPS (new autozone with new Napa). Was all set to have a record speed changing the cps till I dropped a bolt in the bell housing. Luckily I got it out easily by removing the starter and using a magnet.
I swapped the ASD and associated relays with the other ones I have just for fun.
Then I drove it around and kept it running for almost two hours without issue.
This morning I took it on an approx. 75 mile round trip I get some feed for my parents animals and return a couple parts and to see how the jeep would run. Ran great. No issues ever.
Then this afternoon it started harder, but started, then shut off when I shut the hood. Started up, had a few blips while driving but didn't shut down, and now I don't know what to think.
PCM harness loose? I'll try zip tying it. Didn't seem to affect it running if I wiggled the plugs while it was running so I don't know.
PCM cover bolts shorting? They seem pretty short and clean on the ends.
PCM bad? Can't afford a ~$1000 PCM.
Cam sensor bad? I think it's new...
Bad grounds? Everything was refreshed when I did the swap, guess I should go through again.
Bad fuel pump? Doesn't seem like the right symptoms
Any one have other ideas?

Anyway here are a few pics. The cat pic is because I put my hood up when I'm at my parents so the cat doesn't sit on the warm hood and get muddy prints on it but the cat won anyway. I thought it was funny. Smart old cat.
There is 1100 lbs of feed in the back that I thought was pretty good. It sagged some but not too bad.
And had a little snow fall that I thought was awesome.

Think this might have something to do with my stalling issue? Found this hidden under some tape and the plastic sleeving stuff. Someone thought just twisting it together was a good idea. It made the motor shut down when I wiggled it (4 times) so I fixed it with some clips (I'll go back to make a better/stronger fix) and it hasn't stalled since, about 75 miles driven afterwards.
But... during that 75mi I got an injector code after some hesitation upon acceleration. If it isn't one thing, it's another.

Couple pics from the drive home. Red car in a couple pics is my woman. It was foggy for 300 miles I think. Check engine light cleared itself. Made it home without incident.

Pretty sure my fuel check valve is bad. Going to rent a fuel pressure tester and see what it says when I can get an earlier time off work. Looooong crank even with several primes to start, but runs beautifully.

Well, I tried to test the fuel pressure but the dang thing wouldn't start so I left it alone for a few days. I then decided all my issues were electrical, so I rebuilt all the wires coming off the battery- alternator, starter, body and engine ground, and the wiring harness ground at the dipstick. I used 4awg wire from a sound system I pulled out of another vehicle.
FYI, step one(complete) was to make it work, and step two(incomplete) is to make it pretty and safe from heat, etc. It's been steadily raining today so I didn't completely finish as I couldn't start it to nose it into the garage.

When I finished, the jeep started up instantly. Success! I then checked the fuel pressure because just because and it came right at 49 psi.

Opinions on the audio wire? It was an experiment, budget friendly, and can be changed if needed. I'll keep monitoring.

Jeep has passed the "drive to work and make it home with no issues" test 4 days in a row, I approve.
