WOW nice find!! I just picked up an 89 recently- i think its a pioneer. (no emblems) 4.0, auto, 242, 160k, parked for 2 years for 900 bucks and its in worse shape body wise than that. Typical MN jeep with no rockers under the rear doors. Runs awesome tho- female owner

I'm undecided on the rockers at the moment. While the PO included two brand new rockers to be installed in place of the rusted ones, but I'm almost thinking of welding in some square steel rockers for sliders in the off chance I do end up taking it to do some offroading worse than a rough dirt road.

The way to find out what transfer case you have is to look at the back of it. There is a little round tag red and aluminum colored that gives the low gear ratio (probably 2.72) and the transfer case number.

The dealer confirmed for me that I've got an NP231 TC. I did find out that the extra transfer case I'd received as extra parts is an NP272...if my 231 should ever break, would I be able to use the 272, or is it a case of having to replace it with what you had in there before?

Check these out from our very own COS. I wish I woulda done these instead of my regular sliders. Less loss of clearance.

That's pretty close to what I was thinking of doing, except I came across http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billav...rs/rockers.htm as a walkthrough...they look great, and seem more structurally sound.

I may end up selling my BMW to help finance the cost of the new suspension work. I don't really need a second vehicle, and I really can't afford to do the work to the BMW I wanted to do over the winter. I also don't have the time. >_<

I also found out today which tranny and transfer case I got free with the Jeep. The guy gave me free of charge an NP231 and a 30-40LE. My question is...should I keep them, or sell them to get some extra cash for other things on the Jeep? If there are rebuild/regear kits for the NP231 to make it more useful offroad, it would be nice to have an extra to work on while I leave the other in the vehicle. In regards to the transmission, I've heard that the 30-40LE is pretty much a bulletproof transmission, as is the AW4. Are either inherently better than the other, or are they pretty much equal? Trannies are going for around $500 from the junkyard here, and that's a pretty decent sum of cash to put towards the Jeep...

just my opinion but if your xj has a sound drive line, let the freebees go for what ever you can get to finace the upgrades. should you need to replace one of them down the line. you should be able to beat $500. (craigs list- pull a part jy's) plus the people here can hook you up with just about anything you need.

Oh, on the tires, you may want to look at "treadwright.com" i know they're retreads but you can't beat the prices. a guy i work with just got a set of 286/16's for less the $600 delivered and could not be happier.

Yes, DJ suggested them, and I think I'll be going with them over the the Interco's. Anything special I need to know about using retreads? I've never used them on a vehicle before. Do they hold up as well offroad and in inclement conditions as the regular tires?

they are equal to new in every way. i know the stories and reserves about retreads but to be honest and "logical" the only time there has ever been a problem with them is miss use. (by that i mean they have been overloaded or under inflated. either way they get hot and fail) this will happen with a new one the same way.

Well, I cleaned out the interior some today. I vacuumed the carpet out, which was chock full of god knows what. The front carpet is probably fine, but the rear carpet definitely needs to be replaced. I'm dreading what I'll find under there. I also installed the antenna for my Sirius radio today in preparation for getting that all set up.

Got a guy coming to look at my bimmer tonight; with any luck, he'll buy it and I'll have the cash to get the ball rolling on my lift and tires.
