Default Jeep Noob's xJ

Hi all.

I started out with this 98 xJ..

its white. auto. 4.0L

came with re 3.5 super flex kit.

sway bars are off all the way around.
it has a roof rack with spare tire
front end is shot.

i went ahead and tuned er up. all new fluid. new cap rotor wires plugs and air filter.

cat was busted and intermediate pipe kissed a few rocks in its day so i replaced both of those.

i am rebuildng the front end. i got the currie HD tie rod setup, seals it axle tube seals, power trax lock rite, currie bump stops, and control arm skids. i went ahead and rebuilt the flex joints in my rubicon express control arms. i cant get rid of this clunk!! ugh!

I replaced the worn 32" geolandars with some 31 m/t's

I was sifting thru the junkyard the other day, and I scored a steel gas tank skid plate and transfer case skid, battery bracket, and retractable underhood light all for 40.00! i was stoked

so ill post up some new pics when im not at work

Good score at the J/Y. The clunk could be a broken weld on the control arm boxes. Check your unit bearings too. also the axle u-joints have been known to make a clunk. Front driveshaft crosses need checking too.

Check the u-joints. If you need to replace them then DO NOT buy the greasable ones b/c they have a hollow channel running through them and are thus weaker.

Driveshaft u-joints should be greasable but the axle u-joints are not reachable so it is a waste of structural strength.
You did understand that the axle ones are the non greasable ones I hope. Sry if I wasn't 100% clear about that.

I have a loud clunk as well and happens during slow speed sharp turns. happens often in 2WD. I was told it was u-joints as well.... but am unsure.

Since XJs do not have selectable hubs the axles turn whenever the Jeep is moving. The front axle u-joints and the front driveshaft move as well. So all are subject to be the cause of the clunking 95XJ, you need to check them all. Clunking during turns are more likely to be the axle u-joints though.
