The girlfriend and I, well mostly me, had a hankering for getting out the valley so I decided to plan a little trip to a few destinations. Kilchis Falls, Bayocean Dike Rd., Cape Lookout, 3 Capes Scenic Route, and Pacific City. We departed Monday morning seeking a little adventure of the paved roads.

That tent is extremely cool. Is the ladder the only thing supporting the outer section?

How hard of a task was this? The scariest part for me would be messing with the brakes...

Thanks. Yes the ladder is the only thing supporting the outer half. The three times I have slept in it, I have yet to experience any trouble... Knock on wood.


It was the first time I have changed them. I had a good friend of mine walk me along the process for the first side, and then I had it on the other side. Disassembling the breaks and getting the axle shaft out was the easy part for me, pressing the joints out was the toughest. It was a good learning process and I am glad I have the knowledge of learning how to properly change them.

Well now that I am job-less for the rest of the month, I have had some time on my hands and decided to get creative. I was having two problems with my RTT ladder; locking mechanism and comfort.

The ladder is telescopic, which is quite neat, but sometimes does not want to cooperate. One side would lock in fine, and the other would not as your body weight applies itself getting into the tent. The ladder still supported my beautiful girlfriend and I, but I was not satisfied. Today, I finally found the right height, as well an angle, for the ladder to productively stand.

With the top rung, support by an actual rung that locks correctly, I have found my solution! I went up the ladder about five times or so, all with the 150 pounds of me, and it did what it was actually suppose to!

Man oh man, so as much I love the RTT, getting up the ladder was PITA without sandals on. The ladder is just brutal on the feet, and it is very uncomfortable going up without some sort of shoe/sandal. I had no problem wearing sandals up to the living quarters, but after the last trip, I noticed it was starting to get a little bit more messy in the RTT than I like up. My solution? $7 foam pipe insulation. Ah, now my feet, without sandals, will comfortably climb up the ladder to my penthouse!


I may or may not try to paint my wheels next week. It really just depends if I want to go for it or not, so we shall see... Besides that i'll be in the transition of making a move 70 miles south to Eugene in less than two weeks with my girlfriend. I am definitely trying to get out to Noonday trail once I get down there. August is a busy month for me, but it's all fun and exciting stuff... Did I mention a boating trip at the tail end of August in Southern Oregon! .

From what I've gathered, the + leaf is supposed to be for the driver's side, to accommodate for driver's weight. I think coils are marked 'A' and 'B' as well to differentiate the sides, but it's easy enough to see the height difference on those. As to whether or not XJ's are roughly split 50/50 down the middle weight-wise, I have no idea.

Love the tent! Looks very cozy...how easy is it to install/remove? I wouldn't mind having one, but I'd only want it up there for camping trips.

The tent is awesome and quite the upgrade from the cote I used to sleep in. To take on, and off, it's just a matter of removing the four brackets that are hooked onto the load bars. It takes about 10 minutes, and you just need someone else with you to remove it off the roof. Mine stays up the whole time, but then again, I don't really drive a whole lot.

Thanks man. For now, this is exactly where I want my Jeep to be... with the exception of no ARB bull bar, TC skid, and Gas Tank skid.

i wish i had the money for a RTT. so sweet.i drive about 50 miles a day lifted on 31s, i dont know how anyone could ride 33s with stock gears as a DD like alot of the bigger rigs on here.

I drive about 50 miles in a week... you must be rackin' up those miles. A large portion of the XJs on here are usually under-built due to wanting to get into the air. Different strokes for different folks.

i am racking up miles, FAST, but ive got a re-manufactured jasper in there so im hoping shell last. been thinking of getting a bike or small car to drive around to keep the xj around for as long as possible. Sorry to hi jack, awesome build!
