85 XJ engine swap
I have a 1985 jeep cherokee chief and currently have the wonderful 2.8l engine in it. I picked up a 3.4 out of a 94 firebird yesterday and will be replacing the 2.8 soon. My question is what is the best idea for fuel deliver for that engine? Would it be smarter to purchase a Edelbrock intake and holley 390 CFM carb or keep the Fuel injected system that came with the motor and worry about wiring in the new computer. I'm new to engine swaps and jeeps and wanted opinions from people more involved in doing this stuff. Thanks in advance

It depends. If you were able to get the CPU and wire harness with that 3.4L, it's much easier to just swap everything over, including the CPU. If you didn't get them, I wouldn't even try the swap. Easier to go to the junk yard and pick up a used 4.0L out of another Cherokee and swap it.

I do have the CPU and harness that i pulled off before they pulled the engine but do you think that would be easier than just putting a new intake and carb on?

A 4.0 wont fit in an 85. The front end isn't long enough for it

second of all to clarify for everyone.....he is doing the 3.4L V6 swap because it uses the same motor mounts and bellhousing as his old 2.8L V6 because they are both 60* motors.....the 4.0L uses a different motor mount and bellhousing......the 4.3L V6 is also not a direct swap because of motor mount and bellhousing issues and is a 90* motor
to answer your question the only other swap like this i have seen went carbureted becuase he did not have the CPU and wiring harness for the motor.....I would try to use the fuel injection set-up tho.....you will want it if you ever get into serious wheeling and it will probably save you money over buying a new intake and carb.

If it's a wheeler I would go with propane (gotpropane.com)....that's what we did....wouldn't go back to fuel injection again. We didn't lose any HP with our 3.4 when we swapped. MSD ignition helps to run it a little hotter too. Just a thought. I'm new here so I'm just throwing it out there.

89 4.0 no spark
Joined yesterday read a few posts and was going to go and buy a bunch of parts. I read wires check wires, everything checked out last thing to do was a continuity test on pin c1 and d1. My d1 pin was only in half way. removed it bent the tab a little it locked in. CPS wires plugged the computer back in and fired right up Great site and lots of info. Thanks everyone. Now on to a 85 in very nice condition start checking to see this swap.

I stand corrected it is Novak. And they had the most information on swapping engines and transmissions. They also sell engine mounts that will work for any GM engine. Check them out. I found there page extremely helpful. However there products are pricey. Not to helpful for the average Joe smoe that wants to build from the ground up.
