Default 1999 College Budget Build

So I thought I’d start my build thread, as I have slowly started acquiring and installing parts. I am in college and pay my own way, food, tuition, books, etc. With this kind of budget, most parts will come from Christmases and Birthdays.

I have a 1999 Cherokee SE, with 216,564 on it. Had 207,xxx last June when I bought it. This is my first Jeep, and first car that is actually mine, not a parent’s.

Here it is the day after I brought it home.

So for Christmas, I got a nice list of parts. I got Rampage H4 Headlights, Uniden PRO-505XL CB, Flowmaster Exhaust Kit, Thundercat Spun Cat Converter, and a Prime 4x4 5-switch Panel to replace the ashtray.

I immediately went out and replaced the headlights. Crazy difference. I love how the H4’s put off a horizontal pattern, rather than the vertical pattern my old lights put off.

So I was tired of looking at my CB sitting in my room, so I found a shop between home and school and stopped one day. I picked up a 4’ Firestik Firefly antenna in black, 18’ of Firestik Cable with the FireRing technology, and a Firestik door jamb mount. I then hit radio shack to pick up a temporary power solution, a 12v cigarette lighter plug.

CB mount gave me trouble. It came with 2 different types of screws, and the instructions just said, “use the self-tapping screws”, but one set was not self-tapping. I later found out that the non-self-tapping screws were to put the mic mount onto the side of the radio.

I installed the CB on the right side of the tranny hump. It fits nicely out of the way, and is still easy to see.

I installed the antenna on the left tail light. I used the upper and most left tail light mounting bolt in one of the holes, and then drilled for the other 3. Very sturdy.

Over my spring break, I tried to get an appointment to get my exhaust installed, but the guy in town was way too backed up. So I tried to get it installed early on a Monday morning. It snowed Sunday night and he was closed. I called him and set up the same time the next Monday. Again, it snowed Sunday night and he was closed. So finally, tried for the 3rd week in a row, Easter Monday, he was open and had no one else there. Got it done in about an hour. Love how it looks, and sounds.

For my Birthday, my 21st, I asked my parents for some fog lights, spot lights, driving lights, light bar, and headlight harness.

The specific parts I asked for are:
• Eagle Eye Lights 55w Amber Fogs-- PN: 1613-QHC
• Eagle Eye Lights- 100w 6” Round Driving Lights—PN: HG608
• Eagle Eye Lights- Eagle Series 130w 6” Round Spot Lights—PN: 1615HPC3
• CARR Deluxe Folding Light Bar
• Putco H4 Harness—PN: 230004HW

Hope I get it all!!!

So future plans include:
  • Zone 4.5” Lift w/rear springs
  • Cragar Soft 8’s- 15x8
  • General Grabber AT2- 31x10.50R15 or 33x12.5R15
This will probably have to wait until summer when I have a better paying job and I am home to do it.

I got the kit (muffler, tailpipe, and clamps) from Performance Curve for $105 plus shipping, and the Converter was $43 plus shipping. Then the shop charged $80 for the install.

So my birthday was on Saturday, and my parents told me they hadn't gotten me anything yet. So I guess that means it was on order. I did however get a lot of liquid to drink now that I am 21!

Most of the reason for the price was that a big portion of my old pipe had rotted and I did not have the replacement pipe, so he had to add that, along with a few more clamps. I have had other vehicles done by him and it's always a good job. I don't have any of the tools needed either. I mean I could have made them hand (wrench) tight, and I do have a sawzall, but not the air powered wrench, or know-how.
