I can check when I get home tonight. Can you expound on what problems you're having?

thanks. to begin with, I had running lights all around, and front turn signals but out back I only had brake lights on the driver side, and the left turn signal worked. so, no brake light or turn signal on the rear passenger side. so it would seem the issue lies in the top passenger side rear bulb. I pulled both rear taillights off, and the upper driver side has one wire more than the passenger upper. seems odd considering both bulbs perform the same duties.

there is only a ground on the driver side. I pulled it off, put a new end on it, ground down to bare metal 1" below the old ground location, and ran in a new self tapper. no change.

replaced all bulbs (front and rear), replaced the fuse, and at this point the left rear turn signal stopped working, as did the left upper brake light bulb. it still lights up for the running light, just not the second element for brakes. also, the arrows in the cluster stopped working.

pried up the contacts on all rear sockets, no change.

replaced the turn signal switch, no change. same with the turn signal and hazard flashers. im out of ideas here..

everything else works, headlights (high and low), front turn signals, running lights all around, the truck starts and runs fine, drives fine, im stumped.
I have no idea if this was an existing condition, or something I did. I got the truck with a bottom end knock. threw in a used jasper engine, swapped from auto trans to a 5 speed, then realized I had this lighting issue.

any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated, im stumped.

Signals are weird. Try checking grounds for the fronts as well, just to rule that out as a problem

actually, now that you mention it, I just replaced the entire front clip and didn't see a ground for the lights at all. I did however run an extra ground from the battery to the frame rail. where does the front ground? sorry for asking so many questions, I just havnt been this confused since I was asked to describe colors to a blind friend..

I'm glad I'm in my truck alone, or I'd be getting some confused looks right about now. I'm about to head home, and I'll dig out my books to see if we can find an answer

edit: just finished reading your mj thread.. good read, but lame ending lol.. damned non driving idiots, people here drive like everyone is blind or something. a week or so ago a dump truck almost rear ended (almost killed) a dude on a pretty sweet Harley, saw him at the last moment humanly possible, and decided to swerve into my lane. if I hadn't been expecting it the xj would've been totaled... biker dood had ****in earphones in, looked like he had no idea what was going on till the truck stopped next to him angled into the second lane.

fixed! pulled the rear harness apart. this thing has had 3 different trailer light harnesses hacked in over the years. one wire was completely severed, 2 others had nice sized gashes, and the harness was also caught between the frame rail and bed floor, so it had a short there. fixed all that, installed a new trailer harness and all was good. took it for a test drive, and got death wobble like a mother.

I'm glad you got it figured out, buddy. That's another example of why I don't trust previous owners

yeah, the po beat this thing pretty good. when I got it, the header panel was broken all to hell, the engine knocked, front driveshaft missing, front pinion bearing shot, half of the interior was broken or missing, no radio, broken passenger seat mount, seized rear caliper, missing the vent/bolt that holds the brake lines to the axle, bed is trash, roof dented to hell, and obviously the light and death wobble issues. its a turd, but im keeping this one lol.

Default Fairfax mechanic

Hello,

I'm considering making the trip down to Fairfax from New York to look at a 2 door 2000 Cherokee with 97,000 miles on it.

I've read about the 0331 head problems and would like to hire a knowledgeable person to look at the vehicle for me.

Thanks!

traded it night before last, ill delete that post.. im surprised a mod didn't yell at me. Im planning trips to Alaska and nc next year, and all of my expedition crap wont fit behind the seats of the mj. plus I miss my old xj, so I figured a swap was in order. the new owner of the mj is a member here, so hopefully itll pop up in a thread sooner or later.
