I don't see this approach working out for you for too long. Check out www.Where2Wheel.com for a good amount of trails around Hampton Roads.

I'd highly recommend staying off the beaches unless your down in NC where it's legal. You will stick out like a sore thumb if you try to drive on the beach in VB. Haha and I'm not sure there is an excuse in the world that would get you out of that ticket.

On Hatteras there are jumps, ledges, and many camel-humps (like whoops but with a longer frequency). And often no one around. Driving permit is $120 per year. Worth every penny.
It's fishing season now. Pulling in 40lb red drum off the beach.
How much further is the drive to Hatteras Island than it is to Carova? And is there just as much beach/land to drive on down there?

Before cutting the output shaft, slide the new pinion on and see exactly how much of the shaft it covers so you know exactly how much to leave. The instructions say 1.5-2" and that was a hair short for me so I had to grind down the pinion a little for it to fit flush.

Take your time drilling, even with the jig, to make sure your drilling straight.

When you tap the output shaft, do a 1/4 turn, back it out, spray everything down with some drilling oil, and then repeat the process until it's down. This is where the vast majority of you time is gonna be spent.

About the same distance just different directions. Carova beaches are flat. Access paths are behind the dunes and trails are off these paths. Just do not go where there are 'no trespassing' signs. And if you encounter a series of water holes where there are no houses, beware, it may not look deep but they can be well over three feet deep.
Hatteras Island requires a permit for beach driving and sound-side access.
Deep sand, ledges, camel humps to jump.

Carova is public roads (including the beach Route12) and county owned (Currituck).
Hatteras is a National Seashore and Recreation Area, operated by National Park Service and Fish & Wildlife.

If the tap is tapered than the hole you drill in the output shaft will have to be that much longer to accommodate the tapered tip and create enough threads for the bolt.
A face-shield is advisable while cutting the output shaft, also long sleeves and gloves. The sparks bounce and fly all over.

Beaches and maritime forests of Hatteras Island. 100% legal

During the winter months I will occasionally go one hour north to the Carova beach and trails, also legal. And hike/bike into False Cape State Park at the VA line. Cold and windy is best for wheeling up there (if there is an ocean storm brewing, like today, then don't go, the beach can be impassable).

I was planning on measuring how deep the pinion is and then adding a little extra to make sure its flush. I just need to get some drilling oil.

The jeep is back to being my baby, my SRT4 was totalled yesterday morning on 64 in norfolk. Gotta replace a brake line and hack and tap and I probably will be back DDing the jeep.

Carova Beach, NC and its public access roads, will get to see wild horses too.
Only 15 or 20 miles from VB but have to drive around, 90-100 miles each way.

Assateague Island to your north, but have to buy a driving permit and cross a $20 bridge tunnel each way.

If I had $600 I would offer it, but I just have a Currie steering system to sell or trade. (you are up early, or late)
