I know this thread is pretty much dead but I just bought a Cherokee. Was told bad head gasket, swapped the water pump and BAM! She's ready to go! However suspension and tires are stock. I was thinking about hitting tuttle creek this weekend and my question is if there is a decent amount of trails to have a little fun in the stock toy she is until she's reborn?

Looking for a good mechanic in the Leavenworth area.
Also, for those interested, there's some decent 'field roads' (unmaintained public roads) in Leavenworth county that provide some fun mudding opportunities. 227th St south of K92 (Springdale Rd) comes to mind. Be prepared, road may be flooded, especially in the spring.

I see this thread has been asleep at the wheel for a couple of years. Let's see if this revives any Kansas XJ enthusiasts.
Just got a keeper XJ, the fancy Wagoneer Limited
type. It's an 88 but haven't found any rust. Boring to a lot of you probably, but I'm going to keep "Woody" stock and just enjoy it as a daily driver. I'm too old to spend hours trying to get the mud out of all the hidden areas on a rig. Use to do that with a K5 and just don't do it anymore. Anyone in the Wichita area know a good mechanic that knows the XJ's auto trans? Mine won't shift out of 1st until it hits 30 and is revving pretty high at that point. I don't know where the 2nd to 3rd would shift. I gave up at the high revs at 55 and still in second. Had the trans pan and filter pulled today and Fisher Transmission said it didn't look bad at all. They suspect electrical since there is some evidence rodents have gnawed on some wiring.
What should I look for? Just got my Haynes manual in the mail today so I'll start by trying to find all the fuse boxes and check them. But isn't there an XJ expert down in rural Derby, KS area? Seems to me I took a past XJ I had slip through my hands to be evaluated by someone who was well known down there. But I've slept since then.
