Default Phoenix to Flagstaff

Has anyone ever attempted to drive from Phoenix to Flagstaff while avoiding all of the major roadways?

I feel like that would be a fun and challenging drive.

Which major roadways are you attempting to avoid?
I-17 being the obvious one..................

Are you talking using just dirt roads and trails?

My thought was to stay as close to I-17 as possible. So no going through Payson, Sedona or Prescott.

Basically county roads, back roads, forest roads, dirt roads, washes, whatever it takes to get there.

If you figure it out let me know I'd be willing to attempt that one day. I'm down in Tucson.

Kinda tough to do as most of that is land you can't drive on.

How about Lake Pleasant to Crown King?

Being a mountain biker, more than a jeeper. I can tell you its tough enough to get there on 2 wheels.lots of land restrictions to deal with. Crown king, and mayer are about as far as you could get without private land issues, crossing using freeway partialy. I would love too hear more on this tho

Yep. Lived in Prescott for 35 years and been all over the place off road. It's gotten worse, not better.

Default Lets try this

I am awear that is possible to travel from Cave Creek to Williams w/ very little tarmac in between.
Now I will admit that much of this was accomplished on my BMW GS moto
piror to my getting an XJ, but there is nothing that cant be done on this route in an jeep & as follows ----Cave Creek---Lake Barnett----Seven Springs---Bloody Basin--Cordes Junction---Dugas---Cherry Creek---Mingas Mountain---Jerom----Perkinsville----Williams. This route incompesses a good portion of the Great Western Trail that runs from Mexico to Canada.

Gps tracks are on ADV Rider.Com ( Jerry Counts) member,& Information from Arizona State Parks, OHV program for maps also get MVUS maps from Coconono,Perscott,& Kiabab NF.

There is a new route from Serria Vista /Mexico border north thru the eastern half of Arizona to the Utah State line that was developed by Touratech USA & Butler Maps called Arizona Backcountry Discovery Route, however it was layed out for off road dual sport motorcycles and not sure how 4X4 friendly that would be.Info on AZBCDR also avalible on advrider.com, Touartech USA or Butler maps--Googel is your freind---Some info on Great Western Trail web site but not very active.

Happy Trails
