Hi folks...need some advice/help here if possible. My son just drove his 95 XJ from Socal to school in Colorado Springs. I think the long drive put the 177k Jeep to the test and now he seems to have a noise coming from the left front area of the car. He took it to a local shop and they said they thought the rotors/brakes needed to be redone (rotors were replaced in 2006), the front bearings might be shot, etc. etc. They didn't charge him for the diagnosis and they are putting together a "worst case" scenario quote, but I'm wondering if there are any solid shops or shade-tree XJ mechanics in the area that could help him out.
I do most of the work at home with him and we just replaced his ignition module, fluids, ignition wires etc. and cleaned up his NSS switch etc. but this is a new one and he doesn't have the tools or the facilities (or experience yet) to do this type of stuff on his own. Anyone know of any person or place that could help him out...a school/Junior college program, a good local guy/gal etc., to keep his costs to a minimum and help him learn how to do it more himself? Thanks for any advice you guys can share..it's appreciated! |

I think we'll be okay. Sounds like a brake job and maybe a balljoint.

Thanks for taking a look and offering to help out. The mechanic he spoke with thought he heard some bearing noise, but I know nothing about the shop or what their ethics are when dealing with the a younger customer. I'm hoping it's an easy fix (and so is CJ...LOL)

All done. A new set of pads, rotated the tires. The TRE at the pitman arm has a little play but not too bad. I told your son to keep an eye on it and gimme a call when he's ready to replace it and I'll help him out.

We all need a hand once in a while. A few minutes worth of wrenchin' doesn't cost anyone anything.

I appreciate the help more than you can know. Cj's my oldest of four and the first one to leave the house and it was nice to see someone willing to reach out and help a stranger. I'm an asst. principal of a middle school and a coach etc. and I've always made it a point to tell my kids that helping others is the best feeling in the world and makes the world the great place it can be, and you helped to prove that to him. He was very impressed by your knowledge, willingness to help, your family, and your general helpful nature....and so was I. I really appreciate your letting him do the work and learn something more more about his Jeep and how to work on it and I know that this will be one of those lessons that will help him (and me) to remember to pass it on. Thanks for being one of the good guys.
