Default dog nails...not jeeps!!

i know there are some dog lovers on here that want to help out my poor dog. he broke one of his rear toes on thurs. last week and was kinda limping around. he is a german short hair pointer, so its pretty hard to get him to chill out even when he is in pain. i took him wheeling with me on sat because he was acting like it was just fine. well he was lying!! he had a ruff day getting in and out of the jeep and was pretty sore when we got home.

well all was ok till i came home last night and found him standing on three legs. i went to let him inside and looked at his foot.

the nail on that toe had come completley off!! you can see the nerves and some pink tissue. i cleaned it up with some peroxide and put a bunch of antibiotic cream all over it and put vet rap on.

poor dude is in all kinds of pain right now!! i dont know if what i did was right or what i should do for this injury. the vets around here all seem a little crazy and i dont like taking him there.

does anyone have any suggestions of what i should do? other than what i have done.....i also gave him a baby asprin last night for the pain(81mg).

i have never had to deal with dog nails other than trimming em up with my dremel

Baby aspirin is a little on the weak side, what does he weigh?? I give my dog a full strength aspirin from time to time for pain, but she is about 65 lbs. If he is smaller than that, try 2 baby aspirin. I think what you have done will help a great deal, but make sure it stays clean, or it could get infected very easily!! Dogs don't care where they step, if you get my drift!! LOL!! HTH!!

Just keep checking daily and cleaning daily and let it air out. If you have a crate, put him in there so he can relax. Dogs are pretty tough and usually will keep injuring themselves. Especially feet! If it seems puffy and red (infected), I'd just take him to the vet.

I had my oldest break a nail up close to her paw, and I took her to the vet. All he did was clip it off, and tell me to give aspirin, and keep her still, so there you have it!! It healed up very well!!

thanks guys!! it is swollen a bit because of the broken toe. not too red more pink....i figured it should prob air out durring the day and i will rap it and put on antibiotic cream at night. when he is the house he is calm so he will be staying inside for a bit. my husky hates the idea of staying inside so it will be pretty easy to keep them separated and not acting all crazy when im at work.

they act like wild beasts when they are together!!

having nothin to do with my dogs nails but when i had my beagle i got her fixed and we kept her gated in the kitchen with the lamp shade on her head. well we went to dinner one night and she took the shade off and chewed out the first layer of stitches oWWW so i got home and had to take her to emergency vet in parker. 75 initial fee with a the sedative and staples it was about 150!! not to bad but at 2:30 am and half drunk i was pissed. oh and it ruined the lady and I's date night, so no brown chicken brown cow.
