After sitting for two years with no brakes. I put in all new rear brake parts and drums and two new brake lines this week. I didn't know if it would start and the battery was dead so I hooked up my battery charger, and it was dead so today I jumped it with my other vehicle and it started right up. That is one of the reasons I have liked this XJ, it always starts and it has 265K on it. I needed to start it to finish bleeding the brake lines.
Woo Hoo, couldn't go far without a front end but I now have brakes.
Next is replacing (and banging out some inner parts) sheet metal, I have everything from the front doors forward from a Comanche. Same year.
After that it is pulling the broken windshield and cutting out and replacing rusting sheet metal above the windshield. Had to have brakes to be able to drive it into the garage.
After that it is time to tackle the rest of the rust. Mostly the rockers. Want to weld in box sliders. The rest is pretty good.
After that it will be suspension and tires.
This is my long term cleanup and build project that I will probably finish sometime, maybe.

I attempted to install a tiny little 2" lift with coil spacers and RC's adjustable shackles. Not a thing went right for me. Every bolt was seized to the metal sleeve and I ended up having to burn the bushings out of the leaf springs. Ordered new bushings from the local parts store and they come in tomorrow morning. I pray God the front goes smoother.

lights and window
Bought my jeep last week, and that same week on Saturday went to the junkyard and got a bunch of parts. Put in a new rear window and worked on the rear brake lights and reverse lights(which one side still doesn't work, going to be a deeper issue than I though). This coming weekend I plan on putting in the "new" fuel tank, current one has a leak (this is going to take a while). Then going to take it for a ride around the neighborhood!

Bought mine Tuesday, installed a new rear drivers side turn signal plug, New Kenwood stereo(speakers are good but the left side still don't work, tracing the wires tomorrow any one know where or if there is a connector?.) De-greased the engine and got a no spark condition(dried the dis cap, it was wet) checking the ASR tomorrow along with the CPS and Cam sensor.
It's got all of the typical leaks, the oil adapter, back of the valve cover.
I'm Semi-retired and needed a project to keep me busy.

Had to do the oil filter adaptor on my sons XJ a while back. That can be a bear. Google and this site can help with many things we come up against. Good luck wrenching!

Welcome to the world of XJ's and how rewarding working on your own project and solving the problems that come from owning such a great old relic. That will serve you with hour/years of great times on and off the trails. I am also semi-retired and find a lot of satisfaction with this hobby.

I was an Automotive Tech for a couple of years and ran my own shop, I'm just as rusty as my 92'.
I checked the codes and got 12 and 54, 54 tells me the "stator"or Distributor Pickup has a problem, I checked the Crankshaft position sensor and I couldn't get a good connection with the volt meter to check it, I got 5v from it and the stator/Distributor pickup so that tells me the Computer is working.
Yet to get a good connection to the signal wire and turn it over by hand to check both.
Read a forum that stated if you crank the engine over normally if the tach moves then the cps is good, also read if the fuel gauge & voltmeter work when the key is on but no spark then it's a bad cps.Only found this info in one place so far and would like to confirm both before answering anyone in the forums with a no spark problem.
I have considered taking out the CPS, cleaning it off and waving a screwdriver in front of it with a voltmeter attached to the signal wire and ground.
Tomorrow I'm diagnosing more to single it down to the right part before wasting money.
edit: to save time I'm ordering all three, installing the stator first and keeping the others on hand in the jeep.

I have been pretty lucky with my XJ's Most of our issues were relatively easy to fix so far. I feel these are pretty easy to work on, I am not a mechanic by any means, but pretty handy with tools so between the Books and the Forums I fell there is very few things I can't take care of. Hope you find what is the issue.
I'd have to agree with this statement completely.

What did to XJ today?
Got the cargo area all
Bloody carrying a stout 6 pt buck to the processor.
Was thinking I may need new tires but the jeep pulled right up a very steep hill on totally saturated ground... Did not soon once with stock Susp and pretty worn tires.

I'm prepping the garage so I can actually pull the XJ in and add some parts this weekend (sye, new DS, shackle relocation brackets, cb radio, axle shims)
