Default How did you replace your engine?

I'm a long time xj owner and would like to know what owners are doing for engine replacements when they finally die.

Any suggestions on good priced 4.0 replacements, locally preferred
or Shops that can rebuild for less?

In the past I've just found it easier to just find another donor and just swapped out what I needed but these models are getting older and older so low mileage is hard to find anymore.

Most of my engines are getting just shy of 300K

Did anyone happen to replace with a Mercedes Diesel? and if so would you do it again and how much did it run you?

I replaced mine from oreillys I think I got just the block and head for $1300. And swapped all my old sensors and pulleys over.

Some crazies are going for LS1 swaps. I have heard of an engine builder in Portland that knows it's sh.t and was entertained by a 4.6 stroker rebuild. In my area there is a shop with a 4.0 sitting on the floor for sale. Think it was $350

How handy are you? Is this your only daily driver?
Sign up at your local community college for an engine rebuild class. You'll have to provide your own parts but you can probably get a short block from a local scrapper for a couple hundred bucks. Rebuild/reman your own engine!
At least that's gonna be my plan when I gotta do my 5.9.

Found one on Craig's list, $350 for complete engine bout an hour away. Runs great no smoke and no oil use so far
