Its called an NSS or Neutral Saftey Switch.

I posted here in tech last week two links on how to rebuild one. Somewhat easy to rebuild.

After cleaning my NSS switch i noticed that my shifter is tighter than before.
Is this normal ? I loosend the retaining nut and it didnt make mutch of a difference.

The shift rod goes from the drivers side of the trans where the cable hooks up through the tranny and through the NSS. It is the bigger nut you took off to get the NSS off.

I don't know the torque spec on it but I would suspect either you didn't grease it enough, the grease was washed away or you have the nut too tight.

I haven't done the NSS yet to mine. Gotta do it in the next month.

Bouncy, I think I could have way to much grease in the NSS.
Its def not overtightend either. I made sure that it was loosend after I did the first start up and realized it was stiff.

But over all, Its great not to have to jiggle the shifter handle to get it started.

I have seen people put enough dielectric grease in switches that it squished out but never seen that make them stiff for over a few movements of the switch. Double check that you didn't get a kink in the cable or put the shifter in any bind from other sources.

It seems to have let up and now is no where as hard to shift.
It didnt take me 45 minutes to get the NSS off , cleaned and back on my Chairokee.

Did you follow the write-up exactly? I have done a couple but the tranny was already out on the ones I did and it was a piece of cake to do. In the vehicle would of course be harder.
