Wiring Schematic for 1990 Cherokee Ignition Switch
Does anybody have a diagram for the ignition switch wiring on a 1990 Cherokee? I recently replaced the switch because one of the wires shorted out and I believe the the wire is ruined and is the cause for my jeep starting and then dying when the key is relased from the start position to the "run" position. Any help with what each wire does and which colors correspond to them would be a huge help. Also any other sugestions to what may be the reason for why the jeep starts and then dies right away would be greatly appriciated. Thank you.

If you still have the ballast resistor for the fuel pump (mounted on the firewall), that can create those symptoms. It's bypassed in "start", but power for the fuel pump flows through it in "run". You can bypass it permanently with no harm done.

Thank you. That schematic is much better then the vague one that I had. If it turns out not to be the ballast or the wires, is their anything else that you can think of that would cause this problem? I have been without my jeep for two weeks now and still haven't figured this problem out.

ignition switch 1990 jeep cherokee
I'm having the same issues with my 1990 jeep Cherokee, I pulled the ignition switch off of the column and it had a burnt spot on the connector. replaced the switch and nothing changed. how could I test if it is the ballast, and how would I go about permanently bypassing it? also I'm waiting on a new female connector for the switch because it melted fairly bad. how could I test to make sure that wire in the burnt slot is still good? thank you in advance!

Here. It's on the driver's side inner fender.
