93 XJ Sport 4.0 AW4. 257k miles. Mods: K&N filter, TBS, Tornado-type intake device. No lift, 235R75/15's.
I get 18 around town and an honest 20 hwy. Best I ever got was 23 after following a snowplow at 40mph for about 50 miles in 2WD. I also got 19 out of a tank doing about 180 miles of it in the snow in 4WD from Southern to central Oregon at about 50mph.
Someone said in a previous thread that the XJ has the aerodynamics of a large brick. Funny but true. A while back I saw on another forum a post from a guy who said he made a heavy rubber-type skirt that dropped between the front wheels. Said he got another 2-3 mpg hwy. Can't confirm that but it makes sense.

96 Cherokee Sport, 4.0 AX-15 3" lift on Duratracs, carry a ton of gear inside it and I drive pretty conservative (shift around 2100 RPM). I don't go below 17 mpg city and don't get above 18 mpg highway.

18mpg but on lpg which is under half the price of petrol it works out at a shade under 40mpg.
My daily driver is getting 61mpg but its not a jeep.

Wow.. Im amazed at how well some people are doing.. I ran my tank out twice with new injectors, tunup and everything else.. coil pack. Its a 2001.. Seafoamed a few times.. runs great but sucks gas like a pig for some reason. I drive mostly highway. 177K.. I am at a loss to see people getting anywhere near 20mpg.. I must have more problems.. I still have jumpy idle and the injectors are brand new ones.. Im thinkin o2 sensors are shot but those are expensive.. Suppose to change out at 100K all of them.. Doing all of them is over a 200 dollar job since there are 4 on this truck.. Ideas?

1991 briarwood. I get low 15mpg to high 15mph no matter how I drive. Highway or in town, 2wd or 4wd, ac on or off. I have k and n cone filter, put in 703 injectors (reset ecm mpg went to hell for a couple weeks like 12mpg but back to 15 now) tires are 235/75/ 15, no lift. compression is perfect. I have pretty much givin up on better mpg. its got 191k on it. I got it with 122k for 500 bucks. so it its what it is i guess. oh yea i do get better mpg with 89 gas. 87 will put it in the 14s and so does 91.

Stock 99
I just survived a 2,100 mile trip in my 99 Sport. I removed the front driveshaft since I new I would not need the 4wd. I kept the cruise control on 68 - 69 I got about 22+ mpg. I did put a bottle of Gunk fuel injection cleaner in the tank on my trip back home. I did the best on mpg on the return trip and the Gunk keeps it running smooth, so from now on a bottle every oil change. Stock 99 auto 235-70r-15's and 355 gears. Try to stay at 2250 rpm's with the 355 gears. My wifes new liberty 2wd city Jeep gets about the same on the road 22 - 23mpg but it has 323 gears and runs at 2100 rpms at 70.

ive been doing some test mpg stuff with my OBC and before i was getting 11.8 ish mpg city and 14-15 high way I started running 93 to see what types of differences i would get "i use the same shell gas station" and on 93 im now gettting 14 ish city and 17-18 high way ...all of these were done after i added the 5.0 mustang injectors. my jeep has 252k on the clock and i think thats pretty damn good imo

besides and/or in lieu of installing the vacuum gauge, keep your speed at 65 or less (drive like a blue-hair!) remove roof rack (incl. the cross bars on the OEM piece) and check your tire pressure!! all three of those things alone will gain you 3-5 mpg's maybe more.
i have '99 with 2" JY BB (V8 coils/mixed S10/XJ leaves, all new monroe shocks) no roof rack, 235/75-15 GY wranglers, 3.55 gears/AX15/231j/4.0L (w/new injectors, high-flow muffler, stock air filter, but nvr use any 'snake-oil' additives/cleaners etc.) drive like grandma, frequently pull kayaks on a little utility trailer and/or have loaded hitch mount bicycle rack, and get running average of 20mpg (+/- 1) every tankful.

as of 2 minutes ago it said 20.9 avg mpg. I'm stock 4x2 classic with 125k. I'm pretty sure I've got a nasty exhaust leak as well. I need to look into that asap.
