what transmission fluid?
what transmission fluid should i get for a 1996 jeep xj sport? my car has been sliiping like crazy and i just check the trans and i dont have any fluid so i am wondering what kind i should get.

Dexron/Mercon III compatible ATF (not ATF+4). It's usually referred to as "Dex/Merc Multivehicle ATF"

WHY R PEOPLE NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTS OF THEIR JEEP. not to mention probably the most expensive.

ok went to autozone and had them check the trans fluid they said it wasnt even on the dipstick so i dont have any. how much do i have to add. i lost my manual. so i dont know how much to add. and crystalion why dont you just be quiet. last week my transmission started to slip and i checked it i was still in the ok but by yesterday i didnt have any. i do take care of my jeep it not my fault that i have a transmission leak and have no money to fix it right now. so why dont you just shut your damn mouth..

before anything else, i need to ask this...
How are you checking your transmission fluid? You should be checking the fluid level with the jeep warmed up (after a drive), with the engine running, parked on a flat surface. If any of those didn't happen check again.
If you find it's low, just add fluid through the dipstick with a small funnel until it reaches the proper level (still with the engine running).

^^^this man knows what he's talking about...
I would personally do a drain and fill (typically requires 3 qts of fluid).

2000 XJ sport. Was relegated to my wife's winter vehicle when I replaced it with my 2010 Expedition, Limited with all the bells and whistles. Boy I loved that new truck, but nothing beats an XJ. My poor Expy was totaled by a twin trunked 100' Ash during Sandy a couple of weeks ago. Mustang will be back on the road in the winter and the XJ is back to DD service. Putting a new stereo deck and speakers in this weekend, I can't commute anymore w/o Bluetooth!
i just got the same news (and recommendation to replace the radiator) from my very trusted mechanic. He furthered the thought with: you've got over 145k miles, I'll fill it up and you keep checking it. If it only loses a little, keep adding. If it loses a lot, its probably not worth paying (7-8 hours labor) him to take apart / check for leaks / rebuild.
