Just like the title says. I'm planning on doing an oil change this afternoon on my new xj. What oil do u use? Weight? Brand? And how many quarts.. its the 4.0 i6. 4x4

I like Valvoline 10w30 synthetic blend for high mileage vehicles

5+ quarts. Check carefully as you get close to 5 I always seem to be about 5-1/4 or so

Your 4.0 litre requires 6 quarts with filter. I and my owners manual states to use 10W-30. If your Jeep has high miles you may want to go up to 10W-40. Oil and oil filters are really a matter of personal preferance. I personally use Castrol products but, any oil bottle that has an SAE rating on it is a good product. I always go with a Fram or Wix filter. I hope this helps you.

Thanks for the quick tips guys. It has 100k miles, is that worthy of 10-w40 or will I be ok with 30. Or is it even a big deal at all.. lol.

I'd stay at 10w-30. i have 200k and still use it. just a high mileage one

cant beat that active cleaning, it really does work

I use the Castrol GTX high millage 10w-40. Its a little more expensive but I'm brand loyal. As long as you use any name brand oil and not the gas station 10w-30 you'll be fine.

I do recommend staying at 10W-30 with your mileage but a High Mileage oil would be good. I use Castrol High Mileage....lol...my XJ just turned 256K and she still doesnt burn a drop...lol...now leaks are another story.

I wonder why I only get about 5-1/4 quarts in?

I-6 4.0 with running the Jeep for a few minutes to warm it up. Shut it off, fully drained, fresh Fram filter. Dripstick topped off.

Seems weird to me. It's been that way for the 9 or so years that I have owned my 96.

I've only owned the 98 for about 6 months about ready to make the 2nd change so I have not picked up a pattern on this one yet.

Any plausible reason why I would only get 5-1/4 quarts in my 96?

You are doing the right thing by getting the gouge on what oil products work for other XJ owners now just do them religiously every 3months/3K miles and it will work hard for you and last a long time. I run the peewad out of mine every wheeling trip and drive it daily to and from work. Taken good care of the 4.0 inline six is bombproof.
