weird sound
on a 96 XJ 4x4 automatic, Dana 30 up front and Dana 35 out back, I hear a very low howl when I accelerate, I can be driving at a regular speed of 40 mph and I push the pedal and on the first 500 revs I hear this howl, what can it be, I dont have any vibes and the Drive Shaft is not loose at all

Kinda sounds like theres a car next to ya with his sterio turned WAY up with lots of bass.
Only difference is i have a 8.25 chrysler.
I kinda thought it was my tires??
And it doesnt do it all the time, just occasionally.
And not always when accelerating either.
My driveshaft is tight too, no slop at all.
I swapped out the diff oil for some RoyalPurple 75-140.
But i dont think it made any difference.
It seems fine, just annoying.
It seems to go away at speeds over 60 btw.

Belto, do you have a trac-loc?
Mine is, and the RP gearoil bottle says it has the "friction modifier" for limited slips already added in.
But ive heard from a few people that they dont add enough.
I have a bottle of the Mopar additive, maybe i'll try throwing it in and see what happens.

Yes the chrysler has a rubber plug like the dana 35.
They look very similar too.
You could always get your local Chrysler/ Jeep dealer to print you up a build sheet for your Cherokee.
Just take them your serial number and they should be willing to do it for you.
That is one way to determine what exactly is in your Jeep.
Or you could just compare your to these pics:
took these when i changed diff oil.
btw if you do yours get a lubelocker gasket. much better than rtv or paper/ cork.
If you can get both rear wheels in the air, turn one wheel.
If it turns same direction its a posi, if it goes opposite it's a one wheel peel.
