If there is oil in your coolant and/or in the coolant recovery tank then you can be assured you have a blown head gasket. If there is just water in the oil it could've been submerged underwater offroad or something, you never know.

It might be worth changing the oil first, before jumping to conclusions. I'm sure you'd feel like an idiot if you did all the work to change the head gasket when it wasn't even blown. Put some fresh oil in it and check it in a week and see if there's water in it again. It only needs to be underwater once to get water in the oil. Also, if it's real bad you'll be pouring out white smoke like there's no tomorrow.

If the head gasket is blown would all the oil look like chocolate milk or could just a portion of it look like it? At the very bottom of my dipstick (1st 1/16 - 1/8 of an inch) looks like chocolate milk. I recently changed my oil and put a new water pump on. Since I put my water pump on I have had a slight leak by the passenger side tire that I haven't been able to locate, so I do lose some coolant, so I can't base a blown head gasket based on loss of coolant. Its bone stock so I don't do any wheeling, but it has been snowing on and off the past couple of weeks here so I have been driving on snow covered roads.
Its a 1989 with a 4.0 closed cooling system (which was a pain to fill back up with coolant)
Thanks for any advice

iv got the same thing, i braught my new 88 xj in to have the back end all redone and they found a bit of milk at the tip of my dip stick....so they did a full oil change and for about a week it was fine but today my starter went so while i was figuring out what is going on i checked the dip stick again, i thought maybe it blew right as i shut er off and hydro locked it or something so i pulled the plugs and yada yada yada, turns out it was the starter but then this water in my oil....im not blowing any white smoke, it runs pretty fine, theres no oil leaks on the pan so i did go wheeling last weekend and had to cross a river but it wasnt that deep. could it be from replacing the fresh air tube from the filter box to the front of the valve cover with a edelbrock breather? could water vapours be getting in through there?
