Default new serpentine belt and overheating now

I just put a new serpentine belt on my '99 XJ. Followed the belt diagram on the fan shroud to a T. Took it out for a spin after adjusting the tension on the tension pulley, and it got hot really fast as well as not showing any volts on the voltage gauge. The weather then turned to crap and I don't have a garage so it didn't get pittled with any more last night. I'm not much of a wrench head so any input is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Sounds like the belt came off.

If the belt was the ONLY thing you did, you must look at work performed.

The belt may be slipping. It needs to be pretty darn tight on the 4.0

I suspect a loose belt as that would result not only in overheating (it powers the water pump) but voltage issues (it powers the alternator)

Look to that belt.

thanks guys, am overheating now because the e-fan won't kick on. been reading on here that it is probably the relay switch but nobody has explained exactly where that is ( i know, i know... FNG). I've found posts that say that #10 on the interior panel goes to the relay switch, but also that the switch is on the under hood panel. thanks again.

R u in Montana? Ambient temps still kinda cool there? If u are and they are, seems like the mechanical rad fan would be adequate if all else in the cooling system was functioning correctly. Seems if belt was loose, it would be squealing on something (power steering pulley in a turn).

Oh, my bad, I read that he snugged it up and it started overheating and indicated no volts.

Another good point. Verify belt routing is correct.
