Does anyone happen to know roughly how much an AW4/NP231 weighs? I ask because I am planning on getting one from the local pull-a-part this weekend, and they won't let you take any form of jack, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to get it out of the jeep and onto the ground without just dropping it..

It will be a little more work, but remove the tcase from the trans first. The weight of the tcase in it's offset position will make it impossible to do without damaging the parts or injuring yourself.

A 231 weighs 65 lbs, not including the 2.5 pints of ATF inside it and the AX15 probably
weighs less than 385 lbs...Tj

i got mine from pull-a-part and i would recommend taking everything loose remove the braces and let the tranny and t-case hang, remove the t-case let it fall and then the tranny, it wont hurt it to fall that far just make sure everything is removed like lines and wiring harness and dipstick. then just yank it out from under it

i just moved an aw4 with 231 attached. It took two of use to move it. I bet it weights 200-350lbs all together, so don't try to bench press it.

thanks for all the help and advice guys, i think i'm probably just gonna let it hang and then drop, but there's gonna be two of us, so we may decide to be idiots and attempt to bench press it...but it's doubtful.

Play it safe. I totally wrecked my back last week picking up a AX15 trans. It only weighed 85 pounds, but put me out of work for a few days. Now I get to start racking up those chiropractor bills.

Hey, I'm about to try the same thing, I know roughly how much these things weigh because of a swap a friend and I did on a dodge pickup, but I've never dealt with the transfer case issue....

Any tips on what order to pull things off?

my advice is tell them what your pulling. for safety reasons im willing to bet they let you take a jack. the one here says you cant take a jack either but i did

just take some wood blocks and set them down slowly with them. unbolt the 2 drive shafts, then unbolt the tranny from the engine. remove the slave line and the breather tube. then brace the cross member with the 2x4's you brought with you, then unbolt the cross member and slowly let it down with the 2x4's pick them up together and set in trunk, all good to go

another thing i found very helpful is to take a ratchet strap and run it from frame to from under the bellhousing and when i drops it can catch on that rather then landing on the ground.. works great!

the aw4 isn't all that heavy, not much more than the t-case. however, with it all together (t-case, tranny and torque converter) it weighs too much to carry.
i carry them around all the time, but separately, of course.

as long as the jeep isn't too high off the ground so the tranny doesn't have too far to drop, landing on the soft ground isn't gonna hurt it.

take straps with you if you can... since you are not considering the body of the vehicle, you can attach ratchet straps around one side of the door jam and under to the other. with your friend you can make sure the tranny falls and use the straps to break the fall..IMO!!!

My junk yard gots these big hoists on 4 car wheels that are big enough to go over a car for pulling engines out. Not sure about you JY but everybody at ours just pulls the engine out with tranny, and then leave engine on the ground and unbolt tranny and take it.
