does anyone know where the transmission solenoids are
my haynes repair manual doesnt have anything about them
unless they are there i cant find them
my check engine light came on and i brought it to autozone and they hooked it up to the computer and thats what it came up with
soooo if anyone knows where they are please tell me

They should be right on the passenger side under the dash bezel. I know that's where the TCU is also...Tj

the solenoids are located on the valve body of the tranny. remove the pan and you will see them bolted to it

X2. They are mounted to the transmission valve body. You have to pull the tranny pan to get to them.

Just a bunch of bolts to drop the pan, you're gonna make a huge mess, no no no, I mean HUGE mess. For good measure, buy a tranny filter/gasket kit for $14 since your gonna be in there, and it'll make re-assembly easy.

How sure were they that it was the correct code? Only reason I ask is because OBDI had a nasty habit of spitting out retarded generic codes, something as simplistic as a voltage spike or drop to the solenoid. For example, if it sends 2.5 volts, and expects 2.5 volts back to acknowledge everything is normal, but receives 5 volts back, it freaks out and throws a code.

well i have several codes
4 of them i think
1 of them im going to care of this week i think if everything works out
p0171 which is fuel to lean and it could either be bad injector bad mass air flow sensor or oxygen sensor
umm
i dont remember the other ones i have them written down somewhere
but back to my trans
it feels like its not down shifting and thats where a couple of codes lead to the transmission solenoids

I just did a trans solenoid on my 96 and my 91, to test them without droping the pan you can pull the harness off the TCU and test c14,c15,c16"the harness will be labeled 1-16 just look closely" "if I remember correctly so double check"...they should read between 11-15 ohms...the TCU is located under the passangers side dash "just stick your head under there and youl see a 5"ishx4"ish box" pull the harness out and test those 3 spots with your multimeter...one of my solenoids was reading crazy so I dropped the pan and tested it again in person, it was bad replaced it and shes shifting great now!...to drop the pan I put a jack under my tranfer case to hold it in place while I dropped my crossmember "8 bolts" then unbolted the dipstick from under the hood "1 bolt it was 1/2" or 13MM"...I sqeezed the top of the dipstick with pliers and banged it upward with a hammer to pop it out "its held in place with a O-ring so you gotta tap it upward"...then unbolt the pan "sh@t load of 10mm bolts all around...once the pan is down you'l see the 3 solenoids, the solenoids are held on by one 10mm bolt each "unbolt them and pop them out" the new solenoids will pop back in easy "O-rings"...heres alittle copy paste action for ya read up, have fun its not too bad of a job if you have some ramps to pull the Jeep up on so you have room to move around, very messy so dress properly for the occasion...I just literally got out of the shower from doing mine, these links below are from other members here helping me out...good luck let us know how you make out

To check solenoids in transmission without removing pan - removed plug off TCU that is located Rt side dash under clove box -with key in off pos.- volt/ohm meter check pos. lead terminal C14 converter clutch solenoid should read 11-15 ohms, terminal C15 shift solenoid #2 should read 11-15 ohms, terminal C16 #1 shift solenoid should read 11-15 ohms make sure you have good ground on - lead. If solenoid cks good problem is else were loose wires or tps...

oh and pepboys sells the trans pan gasket and filter for my 91 for about $25...Napa charged me about $45 for my 96!!!...the Napa kit was better only because they sold me the rubber gasket, pepboys sells the cork crap, you'l be fine with cork crap but if your not hurting for cash buy the rubber gasket...and walmart sells the cheapest trans fluid around period, trans Fluid cost me like $9 at walmart...this is in New Jersey

cork style trans pan gasket? lies go to autozone all have rubber gaskets if its the kit the cork are junk and i know for a fact az doesnt sell cork style gaskets in their trans filter and gasket sets but either way if you have trans issues if you so happen to have a drill get the socket adapter and correct socket go around loosen them all a tug with the socket wrentch and then hit em with the drill if it dosent have a drain plug throw a matt down start going around letting it drain every 3rd bolt or so intill you get 3/4s all but one corner loosen the last corner ones just a smuge and teader it up and down till you get most of it out and drop it slowly with one hand centered on the pan its easy but a little time consuming ive always found this the easyest and less messy way if your set to minimal tools

trans cpu mounted to the backside lower passanger dash ive gotten them for about 15bucks at the junk yard they dont really go bad to often either way its a cheap way to test just make sure its for the same year and its different for a manual and auto trans also might want to check out the tps it controls your shift points i know on the older cherokees solinoids are easyer to change then you would think most people are like tranny issue sell it but there are some parts you can get to easyly under the trans pan and around the out side

all good info tried to test mine ant the tcu plug and no one had a diagram for me to test them. and in 98 they changed the plug again so itll be hard to test them there. and when i pulled my pan they tested fine. took a hair dryer and warmed them up and one failed. so i knew it was only when they warmed up. bought all three solenoids from the jy for 15.00 and havent had a problem since.
