Exclamation transmission interchange question!

i have a 95 xj sport the auto trans went out an i found a donor jeep cheap. i need to know if i can put a trans out of a 89 xj laredo auto in my jeep with no problem. will it bolt right in or what can expect to run in to. they are both 4.0 l6 engines. the donor jeep does have a swith on the dash to change transmission mode from power to comfort and mine dont.

Actually, you should be able to swap them out - but you will be required to get the transfer case as well, and you'd better note that the transmission is significantly different!

Save yourself some trouble, get a 1992-up AW4 (even check the early 1993 ZJ w/242ci six.) If you get one from a YJ or a TJ, swap the transfer case adapter housing from your old box onto the new one, so your transfer case doesn't smack into the floorboards before you can even bolt the thing up...

I suppose I should have asked what tranny you were planning on removing from the 89 XJ. If the donor rig has a 2.8l V6 or 2.5L I4 then the tranny will be a Torqueflight 904. If it's a 4.0 then 5-90 nailed it and the tranny will be an AW4.

The "Baby 904" was used behind the V6-173 1984-1986. I believe something similar was used behind the earlier I4-150, but I don't specifically recall. The 904 used was a Chrysler box with the GM V6-60 bellhousing pattern.

The 242ci I6 uses the same bellhousing pattern as the rest of the "Modern Era" AMC sixes (199/232/258ci) and Gen-II/III AMC V8 (290/304/360/390/401ci,) and therefore would not work with the Baby 904 in any pattern (the other patterns used for the A904 were all Chrysler.)

The only auto used in the Jeep XJ behind the 242ci I6 was the AW4 - the 42RE did get used (Chrysler overdrive four-speed auto,) but that was just in the Grand Cherokee from mid-1993 forward.

So, both transmissions will be AW4s with the AMC bellhousing (the bellhousing is removable on the AW4 - but most of the rest were Toyota patterns, since the AW4 is a Toyota box...) so that's not a problem.

The problem is in the output spline count - the AW4 got a 21-spline output until about the end of MY1991, then went to a 23-spline. Thus, get a 1992-up AW4 to save the output spline problem, or make sure to get a 21-spline input gear or transfer case if you get an earlier box.

The only other real change was that the later AW4s had a different overdrive ratio, but it was still fairly close (I think the earlier ones were 27% OD, and the later ones were around 23%, as I recall - or .73:1 to .77:1.) The case didn't change, nor did the internal controls.

If you want to verify that the transmission models are same-same, just compare the shape of the pans. Automatic transmissions can be identified by the shape of the oil sump pan on sight.

After all this time I finally got a transmission to line out. I have been through 2 aw4 trannys and 1 np231transfer case. Back on the road and occasionally off road. Gotta keep racking up those miles. I'm currently on 327,429 mile on the odometer!

Welcome to the forum, Kate Smith.

Here's how to start your own thread. Pulling up ancient threads to ask your own question is called, "thread hijacking" and it is frowned on. It's also a good way to get ignored.

The newer NV3350 might be a direct swap.
