Default Transmission fluid leak

I tried searching for something similar, but to no avail.
MY concern is a pretty decent trans fluid leak.
I have completely cleaned the trans/transfer case several times with more brake cleaner than I cared to buy. From what I can tell the pan gasket seems fine/dry. I will go drive around for the day and its wet under there again, but not around the pan. Its slightly farther back. It fills up the T-case cross member with ATF and starts dripping out all over the place. The bottom of the T-case also has ATF all over it because its behind where ever its leaking. the side of the back of the tranny are wet, along with shift linkage etc.. Its getting everywhere. Its starts coating everything else behind it with a film of ATF after a while (axle, shocks/gas tank etc...
Is it common for the rear trans seal to leak where it bolts to the T-case? I cannot for the life of me figure out where its coming from.

Thanks

Why is your XJ so pristine....

Anyway, the adaptor between the transmission and the transfer case has a weep hole in the bottom of it. It's there to drain any fluid escaping from the transmission output shaft seal in the adaptor or the input shaft seal on the transfer case.

If either is leaking it will puke out the weep hole.

The weep hole is at the bottom of the adaptor, and above the transmission mount. To actually get at it you'd have to drop the cross member, transmission mount, and the exhaust pipe support bracket.

Just say'n.

Edit: Check to see what's losing fluid - the transmission or the transfer case.

That is my next step. It seemed like the transmission, but like I said, it seems dry until the very back. Which I would think is either output shaft seal or input for the T-case. It slings all over everything in a short time though, so its hard to catch.

Check fluid levels - AW4 & TC. This will tell you where it's coming from.

I cleaned everything off and I'm going to check levels today.
I have a feeling its one of those seals. I was under there with a flashlight and I could not see anywhere obvious that fluid may be coming from. I was looking up repair procedures for both seals, but ALLDATA is worthless. Seems straight forward though.

Go to pacific Coast Manuals and download a pdf version of your XJ service manual. You can find procedures on how to change the seals in this manual.

Section 21 contains the transmission (AW4) and transfer case.

The Transfer Case input shaft seal is a little more involved than the trans output shaft seal but no biggy.

The adaptor carries the trans output shaft seal.

Those are excellent FSM's and cheap I have one for mine a 99 also. During the download period I installed on several computers and my iPad (full size).

You can printout whatever you want and carry with you to shop, if oil, dirt, grease gets on it just throw it away.

Awesome, thanks!

In response to how clean it is... it is usually cleaner lol. I just purchased it a few months ago from a friend who kept it really clean. No rust, almost no grime, except for this recent leak. I was pretty lucky on getting it, because it almost got traded into a dealer. At any rate, I'll get it plenty dirty this winter.
