Just to let you know, draining the tranny (by pulling the drain plug in the pan) will not empty the transmission of all the fluid. The torque converter holds at least 2 quarts, the valve body holds some, and there is some that always stays in the tranny lines. So, you will still have some mixture of the atf fluid with what you changed out.

if youre dealing with a tranny that was badly overlooked by the po, to get it back to good order youre going to have to drain and fill with new fluid, drive for a bit, then do it again sooner than usual. this allows certain natural friction agents to stay in the tranny that would otherwise be gone if you flushed it.

the bad fluid will eventually be gone if you keep draining and filling until you reach the desired color.

it sucks and its expensive, but you get what you pay for sometimes. just keep with it, and you'll be in great shape later on.

so pulling the plug and letting that drain then filling new fluid was the right way to do it for this instance? or should I have done it differently?

note, it drives MUCH BETTER!!!
prior to the fluid drain/add it wasnt catching, I assume due to being pretty much dry.
It now has power since I changed it last night no more slipping as I step on the gas, or jerking while idle.
