Transmission Fluid
I just put on my new driveshaft and during the process some tranny fluid leaked out the tcase. After driving it it smelled a little like something was burning, maybe not enough fluid? What kind do I get and how do I put it in?

I have an NP231 t case. As far as I know they have a fill plug and a drain plug. Im not exactly sure where they are cause I havent changed the fluid in a while. You should be able to just use regular multi vehicle ATF. Not sure what the capacity is but this is at least a start.

Best thing to do is to check the trans fluid level with the dipstick in the engine bay. To check it, have the engine running with the trans in Neutral.
Chances are the burning smell was the bit that leaked out go thrown onto the exhaust when you started driving.

Its a 242/auto. There wasn't that much that leaked. Should I worry about putting more in immediatly or could it wait a few weeks? Where is the dipstick in the engine bay and the fill plug?

You have to fill the trans through the dipstick tube.
I'd check the fluid now, it's as easy as checking your oil. The dipstick is near the oil dipstick, and it'll be the one closer to the firewall.

Sounds like the fluid came from the t-case and not the trans. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. But, remove the fill plug and check the level. To do this stick your pinky in side the hole and bend your finger a bit, fluid should be close to tip of finger if not a little higher.

when you put the new driveshaft in, did you grease it or had it come already greased? if so, the burning smell might just be excess grease being flung off the ds itself and hitting your exhaust, that'll happen. might not have anything to do with your tcase.

well the tcase gets hot when you drive, so the fluid might have just burned off the outside. or it's the grease. get underneath there and look to see if there is grease on anything

Do you need air tools to take these off? Me and one other person come not remove the fill plug using hand tools. Would pb blaster help?

mine came right out, you could try some PB blaster though. if they're in there so much that you need air tools i'm not sure what to tell you.
but you can get one of those allen heads that has a socket adapter, hit the plug with some PB, and use a breaker bar.

Ok I checked the fluid level and it seems good. I thought this was the reason for it sounding like a chain when I accelerate but now I have no idea. Any suggestions?
