If it's like mine it's inside the bellhousing your not going to find a tube for it.

The vent system was/is the same for the XJ AW4 from 1988 to 2001. The vent fitting (adaptor) is located on the left side of the transmission, just aft of the manual valve shift lever and just forward of the TC linkage (4WD). Its an adaptor bolted to the transmission with a curved 1/4" tube coming out of it. From the tube a 1/4" inside diameter rubber hose snakes over the top of the transmission and comes out near the transmission fluid level dipstick tube. On the end of this rubber hose is a plastic breather fitting (similar to the front differential breather located in the engine bay near the brake booster) . It's kind of hard to locate with all the wiring, etc., located there. No AW4 was vented into the bellhousing.

The adaptor and breather are the same from '88 to '97. The adaptor and breather part numbers changed in 1998 and carried through until 2001.

I relocated my TC and AW4 breathers to a higher loation in the engine bay (see pic). I simply added a 1/4" x 1/4" brass barb coupling and a length of 1/4" ID hose to extend the AW4 breather to its new location. The TC breather is an odd duck, which has me scratching my head as to its design fuction (see pics). It's located down by the AW4 breather. I chit canned this breather and used a front differential breather in its place. I used a 5/16" x 5/16" brass barb coupling and a length of 5/16" ID hose to relocate it.

In regards to the transmission breather, did you just cut off the old breather end, add the brass barb and extend it to the higher location?

is there an advantage to doing that?

Yes, just removed the original transmission breather fitting, installed the barb, connected the new length of 1/4" inside diameter vacuum hose, cut it to length, and reinstalled the (cleaned) original breather fitting, then secured it with a cable tie,

The advantage is the breather is in a cleaner environment up there. When doing some preventive maintenance/cleaning by the tranny dipstick I found the AW4 and TC breathers filthy and clogged so I decided to move them to higher ground. This should be a must do for off roaders.

I should say, when I went to put the barb in the original hose I found it was sort of enlarged (from age I guess) so I used a Loctite product called Stik'n Seal Original on the barb end going into the original hose. Sealed it up nicely.

Thanks again CCKen, I cleaned up and rerouted my breathing vent and tube.

Quick question, the vent (before I cleaned it) was completely clogged up, no air would pass through it at all. would a completely clogged vent cause the problems I was having? I'm guessing that the fluid leak wasn't coming from the vent (since it was clogged) but from further back the line where pressure had built up because of the clogged vent.

Have your power steering pump checked. I had a similar problem, changed alot of seals, gaskets, parts and pipes. Finally found out the power steering pump leaking from its pulley. Give it a shot

First, was the vent fitting you relocated the AW4 vent and not the TC vent shown in post #68?

Yes, a blocked vent may cause ATF to come out the filler tube (and elsewhere). Where was your leak coming from?

Do you have plans on relocating the TC vent valve? If so, the front axle upper vent is Mopar part number J5352955. Check with your Chrysler dealer or get one from the bone yard. If you are going to relocate it, let me know.

after i reread post #68, I relocated the AW4 vent.
Sorry for being an idiot, but what is the TC vent a vent for?

i was never able to find the actual source of the leak, however, after relocating the vent tube and breathing valve i haven't had any smoke yet from a leak.
