Transfer Case fluid
My jeep is my first 4x4, and ive never messed with my transfer case since ive had it. I want to change the fluid in it, but i dont know what kind of fluid it requires. People have told me tranny fluid or gear oil. So which one is it and what weight do i get if its gear oil? Any info will help out. Thanks.

Ok cool. I wasnt for sure. Im using ATF+4 in my tranny....Is that a problem? I havent had a problem so hopefully i wont. Lol. I need to service both my tranny and transfer case anyway. So maybe when i do my tc ill just drop my tranny pan and service it while im there.

The trans is an AW4....which is NOT a chrysler tranny.....it calls for dex II (now dex III) factory. Stick with that, personally i would get that out of there asap!

people have had lots of problems with ATF4 in their trans...
Theres a reason the plug has "DII" stamped into it.

Ok. Jeeps are new to me really. Ive had mine for 2 years, I know thats not really long nor is it short. But like i said ive never messed with the tranny or transfer case. Honestly this is my first auto! All my other cars have been manual. So coming on here has helped me learn new things. Thanks for the info guys.

I use dex III. I was talking to the guy at the parts store and he was saying to use ATF4 but I told him thats synthetic and he said thats fine to mix with whatever is in there so I called the jeep dealer and they said the same but after I looked it up(Thanks to Cherokee Forum) I read it is Wrong and dont use it. I would dran out what you have and refill it.

i put dextron 6 in my transfer case. it stopped the tweeting sound i had coming from it. and i was told its the same as Dex 3 . after i blew my drive shaft 20 feet behind me i needed to change add to the transfer case, so i drained it and put dex 6 in. any objections to that?
