Default transfer case ?

i looked around but couldnt quite find the rite answer to this damn what a huge forum!!!! ok 89 xj automatic my selector on the center console is 2wd,4wh,n,4wl which leads me to believe it is a np231 but when i engauge the 4x4 one click i get a part time light on the dash next click says full time another click and it says full time another click it says full time ? there is one to many clicks??? why???? i am a tj owner as well this is foreighn to me please help!!!

The selector is wrong, its a 242. Someone probably switched the selector plate with one from a 231. I'm not sure if both of the lights are wired up from the factory, but it sounds like someone swapped something somewhere.

3rd click is N
and I think the part time light stays on in neutral

I would just get under and look at the tag on the t-case to be sure. It'll tell you for sure what t-case you have.

thanks ill be under it again in the morning need to replace the motormounts and ill check it then. i bought it missing the 4x4 selector lever and installed one from an older tj seems to work fine just a little long it almost hits the center console when placed in 2wd. why someone would remove the lever is beyond me. at least it engauges into 4x4 thats all iwas worried about i bought the xj for 500 bux if the 4x4 didnt work i was gonna part it out. but its all good so far. took it in the field across the street and climbed a few hills thats when i noticed the motor mounts.
