Trans Case kicks out of 4hi

Trans Case kicks out of 4hi
This winter the first time I used part time 4hi on my 01 xj it seemed like it kicked out of 4hi and just went back into 2wd. The light on my dash has never worked and I had no issues with 4wd last year. I checked and it will go into/come out of 4lo. Now though it seems as if anytime I put it into 4H it kicks out, even if I try to hold the lever and keep it in. I got underneath and made sure there were no obstructions since my buddy put a lift on it for me. And there are no obstructions and it seems to move freely underneath. Any thoughts
