I've been trying to address some issues recently... replaced my valve cover gasket, cleaned CCV orifice, replaced spark plugs and wires, new oil cap, hopefully resolved this recent tendency to run hot (but not overheat) issue with a new coolant bottle and cap, and an oil/filter change.

When I pulled the valve cover I unclipped the throttle cable and, while re-installing, accidentally pressed that button on the top which allowed the tensioner to pop out. I tried putting it back in the same position based on the dirt but I'm not sure if I did. She runs perfectly but I'm a little nervous about that throttle adjustment. How critical is it that I get it back to the exact position and is there a procedure for adjusting it properly? Again, it runs perfectly and idles at 550-600 rpm, no stalling, nothing weird at all, just don't want to mess up my TB butterfly or something by having it out of adjustment. Thanks.

If you're talking about the TV cable (throttle valve) it's easy to adjust. With engine off.. push the D-shaped button and push the cable housing all the way back in (see pic) Release the button and twist your throttle to wide open position. You'll hear it 'ratchet' into position as you do this. That's it. Test drive it to make sure it shifts normally. It shouldn't shift too early or too late.

Thanks, kjc. That's exactly what I was talking about. Not sure I'm gonna mess with it (based on what you've said) because everything seems to be working normally. Plus, it seems like every time I touch something, something else breaks...

If it shifts just like it used to, then it's in the right spot and you're good to go

Well now I'm intrigued... are you suggesting that I can modify my shift points by moving that cable in and out? 'Cuz I see an XJ Sport Mode option in my future

No, I wasn't suggesting that.. improper adjustment can actually cause damage to your transmission. IF it's too far out of adjustment. A click or two one way or the other shouldn't hurt it, but i'd make it as close to correct as possible.

Okay, well now I have to try. I have to admit, I'm not 100% satisfied with the 2-3, 3-4 shift under light acceleration. It's a little sloppy. No problem when I give it the beans, though. Anyone wanna place bets on what I'll break while adjusting the cable? LOL.

I had to disconnect mine to change my plugs, get the coil pack bar off. When I reinstalled it I pushed it too far in and my shifts have become much harder. It definitely has an effect.

You running the trans switch in Power or Comfort?

I was running mine in power a couple days ago, got tired of exploding out of 1st gear in the city all the time. Adjusted it a little looser, somewhere between where I found it and where the tranny thought it should be. Shifting really comfortable now, but enough power when you need it.

Just making a joke. I did this throttle adjustment about a week ago and my XJ starting really pushing out of 1st gear, almost squealing tires, so I readjusted it a little closer to what it was previously.

I typically leave it in comfort, gas is expensive. In fact, I think I've only flipped that switch once, just to see if it worked. It worked.
