Question thermostat, heater core, head gasket?

My 99 Cherokee has been losing coolant and now the blower is blowing tepid, not hot like it used to. I also, sometimes, smell burned coolant after I park and walk past the front end. I live in Maine so the heat is an issue, and I haven't had any problems with overheating (no gauge, just a warning light.) Any ideas? Thanks to all responders.

I bet you have coolant seeping out of somewhere. You can be losing coolant slowly from a leaking T-stat housing, Water pump gasket or seal, radiator hose, heater hose or cracked or blown radiatore tank. This would give you the burned coolant smell you are smelling after shutting it off. It can also cause you to slowly lose your coolant without overheating issues...well...right away, anyway. Once enough of the coolant is gone you will have overheating.

Right after driving your XJ long enough to get it to normal operating temperature, stop, shut it off and lift the hood and smell for your burnt coolant smell and look for rising steam or trickling water or wetness that would indicate the area of your leak.

I had a radiator leak at the pass. side top edge that had the same symptoms. Like the man said, pressurize the system and look real good for leaks. 4.0s are also good at water pump leaks. It'll usually run down the lower hose if the pump leaks.

Right afterwards active your XJ continued abundant to get it to accustomed operating temperature, stop, shut it off and lift the awning and that appears to that appears to smell for your burnt coolant that appears to that appears to smell and attending for ascent beef or trickling baptize or clamminess that would announce the breadth of your leak.
