Hi light...
As long as I can remember....if it is inside......no other hose is attached except to the fuel pump itself.....the other hose inside the pump is not attached to any.Hope this help.....that was the last time I had to take my fuel pump and it has been running good since;-)

Your jeep like mine has the fuel pressure reg on the fuel sending unit in the tank not all are like this but some are its a very hard unit to find as a whol so hang on to it.

Well some '96 XJ's have the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail, but some (later '96's) absolutely do not. I have one that does not and was told by Chrysler that mid year they changed the regulator to be built in with the fuel module. Now they also said such modules are no longer available and the regulator is not either. My '96 has only 56,000 on it and is hard to start. Anew pump didn't help, anyone out there know if anyone supplies these after mid-year regulators?

Starting problem might be a bad check valve- try turning the key to ON, let the fuel pump run a few seconds...then OFF. Repeat. Then try to start.

yes i found the regulator its in the gas tank now be mindful the haynes manual says that to replace this you would need to replace the whole sending unit in that case so not true the regulator can be replaced i found my replacement on ebay very cheap and it works great. if you would like i will post the link to the part just let me know

Would you by chance still have the part number? I'm looking for the entire unit which seems very hard to find. (Rust damaged the outside where the fuel line hooks up and goes to the filter (filter was leaking so I thought I'd be smart and replaced the dry rotted line.... well, shucks. I'm in trouble now, should have left well enough alone!)
I guess I have a multi part question, is it possible to replace just the external part of the sending unit?
Thanks!

Is this my fuel injector pressure regulator?
So I replaced my fuel pump thinking that it was the problem why it wont start, but when I went to start it nothing happened. A buddy says he did the same and had to change out the FIPR and that worked for him. I have read and re-read alot in the forums with no clear idea on where my FIPR is since I have a 96 xj. Some say its on the fuel rail and others say its on the fuel pump. I have supplied a pic of where I think it is. Is this it?

The jeeps that look like yours have the regulator unit in the tank...I think as part of the fuel pump Assy. That is normal for your year . That little cap 2 inches back on the rail is a port to hook up a fuel pressure gauge. Buy one and see what your pressure is I think it's about 50 on the ones with no regulator on the rail..on those its a little lower

like many have said 96 is an odd year and the regulator was in the tank. i'm pretty sure it has to do with 1996 being the only year that had the older body style and OBDII at the same time. 95 was OBDI and 97 was the newer body style.
you should be able to open the tank, take the assembly out and replace only the regulator. people say it's not serviceable but i've seen a few threads of people doing this mod and report back saying it works fine. i have not done it myself but when i'll have fuel pressure trouble it's the first thing I'll do
