Default Swapping cylinder heads

Ok I have a 94xj that has cracked head

Swapping cylinder heads-image-1329401111.jpg

My issue is I have accesses to a junkyard on for free off of a 1999xj, my question is is this a direct bolt on swap or what modifications will be needed to get this to work.

I read about the exhaust ports being a little different on the newer models, like they are smaller and on the older cylinder heads they are bigger? Any ideas would be greatly much appreciated

I can tell you going the other way sucks ....there's talk of an adapter plate to fit the newer (required for smog) manifold's, on the post 1999, to the older head. Then fabing a coil pack bracket.

Guess it's safe to say there will still be a mis/match for the manifolds. Could you use the newer manifolds with your Jeep's PCM? Maybe someone else can chime in...or it can be searched...it's been done, just not sure about smog/inspections. (you would need the older sensors on the newer intake and TB). The MAP moved btw, it's on the TB on the later, that's OK. The exhaust may be way different.

Do you use the newer intake and the older exhaust? I wonder which ports are the issue.

Is the newer intake all round and curvy? Maybe it was CCken who swapped one of those into his.

Go to the parts store and ask to see the gasket for each different application. Hold them one over the other.

Early 99 will be fully compatible, late 99 may have the newer style exhaust manifold. Look at the 99 cylinder head...

Find the casting number, if it says 0331 then it won't work. It should say 0630 for it to be compatible (if it has ever been swapped it may also say 7120 which is the exact same as your 94).

Oh Heck! (brainfart). I think Rockfrog is correct. Easier yet, does the 99 have a dizy or coil packs. Sheez...

I am a manager at a auto parts store the only difference I see is the exhaust ports on the newer xj has the tiny ports vs the older one having descent sized ones, plus I have the HO motor so I have the factory header that will work nice and let it breath a little better

You're good to go.

Flintstone, 2000 started coil packs.

I don't remember but I think it had distributor, I will know Friday when I go back and there was about 8-9 Cherokees and about 20 grand Cherokees in my local LKQ junkyard so if not I bet I can find on that will work :-)

Thanks for all the input and advice, I find that a few people think about the same problem is a good thing
