Default stupid passenger door won't open!

hey guys, just wondering if anyone had any experience getting doors unstuck? i know this is a common problem and i searched like crazy but could'nt find any info on what the trick is to getting my door open without destroying the door panel.

the lock operates fine, but when i push the door button it offers a little resistance but just pushes in soft and releases nothing. hope this description makes sense. thanks in advance for any insight into this stupid door. my girlfriend is getting sick of me driving her truck all the time when we go out cuz she can't get in on the passenger side of my jeep lol.

thanks
troy

acually that happened to my friends stock one...he got mad at it cause it wouldn't opened and he kicked it and it made it alittle better...it opens now but in order to open the front passenger door you have to first open the rear passenger door every time.

I'm having the same problem. My solution was to push and pull on the handle whilst pushing the button to open the door. It really only does it when it's cold outside. I was thinking a little lithium grease would solve the problem, but you may want to wait for more input.

I had the same problem on a 1990. It was a 4-door which makes this easier. You will need someone with little arms. Remove the arm rest on the door and pry off the rear of the door panel. From the back seat, reach in and pull the wire hook running from the inside door handle to the door latch. It has worked for me a few times.

Good luck.

if you know a tow truck operator, get him to use his T3 or T19 unlock tool.
you can hook it on the handle rod to get the door open, then you can get the panel off and find the problem.

or you can try to make one...

It's 20 some odd degrees outside and the same thing just happened to my wife. The driver's side door wouldn't open first thing this am. I got it open. Now it won't open at all. Same soft push of the handle and the latch won't respond. I think she's mad at me because I talked her into buying the XJ.

Spray some PB Blaster in your lock and on the push button and work it for a few times. If you have the door open, spray the latch and pin mechanism, too. If that doesn't work, you'll have to pull the door panel to see if something is disconnected or bent.

I have the opposite problem. The passenger door was a bit difficult to close when I got the Jeep and now the stupid thing won't close all the way. The latch in the door has to be pried upwards to be able for it to hook over the bar on the body frame but it still won't close all the way. Any thoughts?

I ran into the same problem with mine because it sat for a year. First take off the door panel. Then spray every moving mechanism with PB Blaster not WD-40 it is junk. The i used a pair of plyers to pull on the linkage and like majic it opened. Just make sure u work it free before putting ur door panel back on or it will not open again. Learned that first hand.lol.

I had the same problem with me 89... I ended up having to cut the inner door bolt with a sawzall. Once you actually get the door open you can pull out the entire mechanism (its only three screws) disconnect all the door poles and put a new bolt and assembly in... I got mine from a junk yard and it was under 5 bucks for everything. Good luck.

Hi guys, just want to share my "experience", this may or may not do any good in your situation...
Mine is '96 4 door w/power locks.
So when I've got the jeep both rear doors were dead-locked, can't open neither from inside neither from outside.
Finally one day I've decided to try to deal with this.
In my situation there was also a complication, as both rear doors "child safety" tubs were engaged ("ON" position), so the inside handles were "disabled". If I press the outside handle button, it goes all the way in, but the door would not open.
So I had no choice, but take the doors' panel off, thankfully it was actually possible while the doors were closed, but it's pita
You may not need to do so, if you can open the door from inside.

So, in my case, I took the panel off so I had access to that "hole" behind the locker mechanism. I rolled down the window, so I could reach outside and press the button, while with flashlight illuminating the inside of the hole and watching what the hell is going on there. It's kind of hard to see much, but you should see a "piece" (link) moving down. From there (also after spraying all the pieces inside with WD-40, as they were very rusty), while pushing the button I managed to reach/grab that "moving down link" and helped it out by pulling it down a bit more and got it open.
After I've got the door open, then I could set the child safety to "OFF" (also was rusted and hard to move), and now I could open the door from the inside. However, as I close the door, again, I still could not open the door from the ouside.
So what I've noticed, by "observing the action", that it seems that "Pushing The Button action" works, but does not "go down enough" to unluck the locker. Then I looked at the side of the door and found that little hole with "adjustment screw" inside. I am not sure what the correct name for it, but if I understand correctly, this is adjustment of "door handle button action" (?).
So, I've looked into that little hole (see attached photo 1), I see there a small Hex screw, and it has some adjustment play. I had to WD-40 that screw too first. Then I unscrewed it a bit so it's movable and pushed it up (actually , all the way up to the max) and tightened it. So in my case this was just enought to get that "missing" extra action-motion from the Button to the locker, and now everything works fine.
You can try this, see if this may make a difference. I'd imagine, there could be different reasons there...the whole mechanism is pretty freaky there
see attached photos, I did my best trying to make shots of that screw, it's hard to find the right camera angle so the screw is visable.

this happened to mine because my buddies couldnt wait long enought for me to unlock the door to try and open the door. they pulled the lever at the same instant i was trying to unlock it and it messed it up. had to rip my panels apart... if your friends try to do this, throw rocks at them
