Default Trailer Light Wiring Problem.

I have lights wired up on my jeep for a trailer but they have never really worked right. If you hook them up to a trailer the ONLY thing that works is the running lights no brake no signals.
It's a 91 cherokee, any tips on tracing the problem? Or rewiring it completely?

Is it wired to a trailer converter? More than likely, the converter is bad.

I'm not sure i do t know where to check, I read on another forum that it is located behind the drivers side rear quarter panel that was on a 96, is that the same for my 91?

Where did you buy the converter? And where do you put it at?

Check out this link to etrailer. They have a video on how to install it on two different Cherokees.

The Cherokee has SEPERATE Brake/Turn signal lightbulbs. Other vehicles have the brake/turn in the same bulbs by activating the two different filaments in the bulbs.

You need a MODULE to convert the Cherokee 4 wire to a 3 wire. Can be picked up at WalMart for 20 bux or so.

Or on the net. Google for Trailer 4 wire to 3 wire adapter. You can also find wiring diagrams on what I am talking about.

I ran my 92 with no blinkers for a few years. Figured brake lights and running lights were more important. Besides, it was a flatbed so you could see the amber turn signals on the back of the XJ.

Last "harvest days" at the local pick-n-pull I scored another 4 to 3 module from an XJ. Tossed it in my wheelbarrow $40 load with my other goodies.

Hope this helps.

I got my converter at the auto store. It's a universal one as was my last one from the PO. The old one would only supply 7 volts to the brake/turn. Needs a minimum of 10 volts to work properly for the brake and turn.

Get this.Plug & play.It takes longer to remove the rear drivers side panel than it does to install.

As my handle suggests, I came at it a bit crudely. Instead of Mc'Givering up a bunch of doides, or buying something that does that, I just added another pair of bulbs on the trailer and another wire.

I'm not really suggesting that, but put it in this thread for general info. Btw, Red LED 1156 (type) bulbs are not expensive on Ebay.

I guess il take it back and order a plug and play, but it doesn't make since that I am getting power to the plug yet my blinkers and brake aren't working.
