Default Squealing belt

Howdy all
So I have an 87 Cherokee 4.0 and I've replaced the belt, sanded the pulleys tried to align the power steering pulley etc and it still squeals when it's warmed up. Any ideas?

Some people say tighten it until it almost breaks.

tried to align the PS pulley? is the harmonic balancer separating, causing misalignment?

Balancer seems to be running true. I replaced ps pump and I've aligned and realigned pulley thinking didn't place it right. Do you happen to know the part number for the gatorback belt? Thanks fellas.

This site has good info on noisy belts. It's a Dodge truck, but still applies.

Yes, sure still could be a bad belt or one that is not fully tensioned, as the belt on the 4.0 does need to be pretty tight.

But also keep in mind that ANY component along the route of the serpentine belt will start to get noisy as they start to fail. Usually I remove the belt and "hand spin" each of those components to see if I can feel if there is one that isn't turning smoothly......

As mentioned re-check the tightness as these things need to be way tighter than it seems. In the meantime go to the auto parts store and grab some belt dressing. A quick easy temporary (Or sometimes permanent) fix.

Belt dressing doesn't work on serpentine belts. Find the actual cause of the noise.

I agree. Belt dressing can actually make things worse on a serpentine belt as the dressing hangs on the belt and picks up debris as you drive it. The can of belt dressing I have in my garage (for v-belts only) actually says "not for use on serpentine belts" right on it.....

Who still sells Goodyear belts? Autozone used to but switched to dayco a few years ago. Gatorbacks were great belts

What's funny is that amazon.com has them, I just need to measure the belt or get the part number so I can order the right one.

It does? What brand is it? I have a can of Gunk brand belt dressing and it says "For V and flat belts" and it has a picture of a serpentine belt right on it.

Just because it says it can be used dosn't mean it's ideal
