squeaking clutch?
i was just about to pul in my driveway just now and heard something squeak when i was pulling into my road. so i slowed down and let her coast for a second heard a squeak every time i pressed down on the clutch (out of gear). rolled down my window and heard it was coming from the outside of the jeep and not the inside. what is this? should i worry about it? how do i make it stop? sorry for all the questions, had 5 speeds before but never had this happen. oh yeah and its not a squeal, its a squeak, like a door would make or something like that

I have never had an xj with a clutch but I had the same problem with my wrangler and it was the throw-out solinoid easy cheap fix. I am not sure if the xj has the same hydro-type system.

It pushs the clutch so you can shift. It bolts next to the transmission bell. When you push in the clutch pedal it pushes a small shaft that disengages the clutch.

If it is hydro then you will see the resivoir. The part was cheap like $35 and some hydro fluid because it will leak out when you change it out. Fill the new solinoid with fluid and install pump the clutch several times and it will self bleed.

If you need a throw out bearing then you have to seperate the transmission and pull the clutch. Throw out bearings should last as long as the clutch so if your clutch is good then it also should be. Like I said all my xj's have been autos but my tj and yj were stick. I dont remember which one had the problem but it was an easy fix. As jeeps of all types use mostly the same parts I belive that you should have this same part.

You should have a second master cylinder on the firewall to the outside of the brake master cyl. which is for the hydraulic clutch release. I am not sure how it is on a 1995, but on my '90, the slave cylinder and throw-out bearing are inside the bellhousing. Follow the hyd. line from the master cylinder to the slave cylinder.
If it squeeks constantly with the petal in and the engine running, it is most likely the throw-out bearing. If it squeeks only when you push the petal (even with the engine off), then it is the pivot for the pressure plate release.

ok i have the resevoir so how hard is it to replace? and if i dont replace it what's gonna happen?
also, i went out and pressed in the clutch and it made no noise? wasnt cranked though. now the sound wasnt exactly a squeaking now that i think about it it sounded more like creaking. dont know if that makes a difference or not

okay so it sounds like the pivot for the pressure plate release is what it is, it only squeaks when i push the pedal in and out, not when its pushed in, then it makes no noise.

Thats it, it is an easy fix. three 10mm bolts if i remember right. You should fix it soon, if it goes out you can't shift.
