So I was driving home earlier tonight, was on the highway going about a steady 60mph. I go to get over two lanes to exit, and when I accelerated, my Jeep started to sputter and not accelerate. I could move, but when I would put my foot down farther, it wouldn't go past what it was doing. I got off and started driving home, and it kept doing it when I would accelerate at stoplights. I could do maybe 10-15mph, but past that, sputter and wouldn't move.

My fuel pump is probably bad (Airtex I believe), not sure if that's the main cause, but it probably has something to do with it. Possibly bad gas? Unlikely. I haven't changed my spark plugs since owning this Jeep (July 2011). Running a glasspack. Possibly have a factor in it? (Sorry if that in unacceptable to say. Mods, PM me and I'll change it ) And my oil was changed little over 6 months ago. Not really the cause, but I'll be changing it tomorrow. I also plan on ordering some new fuel injectors tomorrow too. Probably the Neon ones or something similar.

I'd start with a tune up. Champion Coppers gapped to .035, quality spark plug wires, distributor cap with brass contacts and ignition rotor. Putting on a new air and fuel filter may also help you. A lot of cutting out issues like that are associated with these items

But to answer your question, that fuel pump could be a possibility of why that is happening. I've heard nothing but very bad things about Airtex. You may also want to run some fuel treatment of some kind (like Seafoam) in the gas tank

Thanks for the fast response! I'll definitely start with the tune up. And I found out after I purchased the pump that Airtex wasn't a good brand. I'll see if I can order a better one online, then return the Airtex when I get it swapped.


I also considered doing the Seafoam a few weeks ago, but didn't want to just put it in my tank, and I didn't have anywhere I could smoke up for a little while. I did run some Lucas treatment a few weeks back though. Think I should still do Seafoam? And replacing the injectors can't hurt as well, right?

In that case, no need for Seafoam in the tank since you already ran Lucas. Good idea changing out that fuel pump. I'd suggest Bosch brand for a new one. A lot of people have found em for cheap on Amazon so I'd try there

Oh and yes, I'd definitely change the injectors to neons. You'll see a smoother idle and better throttle response. Some people report that they saw a gain of 1 MPG. I never saw that gain though when I put neons in mine

I'll do some searching, since I know you have to order a certain model or something. Are the Neons the best for this mod? They're the only ones I hear of when talking about it.

So I had to bite the bullet and take it to a shop today due to me not having anywhere to work on it myself yet. And to add insult to injury, it was a Pepboys.. I had them check it out, and they came to me with a heat related issue. I don't have a fan shroud over my fan clutch. I told them that sounds ridiculous since I've been driving the Jeep for over a year through all different engine temps and have never had a sputtering until last night. And the sputtering happened after a half hour of straight highway driving. I'm going to find a reputable, hopefully Jeep mechanic and have them check it out. If I can find a place to work on it, I'll do a tuneup and go from there. I'm thinking it might be fuel pump related though..

Also drove to class this morning with no issue. Let's see how it is when I go home. Hopefully I don't stall.. doors are off and it's expected to rain.

Didn't see this until now. Not having a fan shroud is not going to cause your Jeep to sputter... You definitely need to take it elsewhere for a different opinion. Unless you're having problems with overheating, I wouldn't worry about the fan shroud. But anyways, do a tune up (I say do that first because it would be a lot cheaper to do than replace with a quality fuel pump and could quite possibly fix your problem). If that doesn't do it, pick up a Bosch fuel pump and replace that.

As far as needing space to work on it... do you not have a driveway or a curb to park up against? All a tune up really takes is a screwdriver (for the distributor cap) and a spark plug socket.

On your 92, you want the dodge neon 703s. I believe there's a vendor that sells injectors now. Try that or the for sale section. You'll get hooked up! I did mine and I love em. I wouldn't suggest doing anything fancier unless you were gunna stroke your engine

Alright, I'll definitely do that, since Pepboys wanted $90 to just check my issue, but I got out of it because what they told me was ridiculous. And I can spend that money on tuneup parts. And I wish I had a driveway, haha. I live in a condo with a community garage that prohibits any work being done on cars. I can go to a friends or relatives house. I'll check the for sale section for some injectors!

Did you verify what fuel pressure you have at the fuel rail? I had a similar problem and my pressure was reading low 20's psi. Normal is like 35-40 psi. The OBD1 scanner also read 'lean". The fuel pump crapped out.

The fan shroud is a factor in the summer. Mine was cracked so I ripped it out and then started over heating.

If you want to meet north Ill toss the pressure tester in the Jeep and test it for you.

Ahhhhhhh..... The phantom xj "sputter".

Mine does it right when I first start it..... The only way to get rid of it for me is to loosen my gas cap a little to vent it.

I haven't checked it yet. My fuel pump is making a whining noise, and I am looking into replacing my injectors soon.
