Default no start

originally thought the battery was dead, tried to jump it didn't do anything. Checked voltage.
I have 12.5 volts at the battery, nothing....no beeping with door open and key in ignition. Battery is new.

Does the engine turn over when the key is turned to START? Or are saying that the engine cranks but won't begin to run on its own?

Default 2000 4.0 sport no crank

No--it does nothing. turn key, nothing, dead....I'm guessing I'm losing voltage somewhere or a bad ignition?....even with the key in the ignition, door open--it does not beep as it should..no accessories work either......also got my digital meter out (12.5 volts with analog) and it read 12.73 at the battery.... I checked 3 fuses---ign acc/run - ign run/start - battery acc--all good

I tried to change the title of the thread but it didn't let me-it should say no crank--I originally thought I had a dead battery

If your battery's voltage is stable, it's not that you're losing voltage. If that were the case, the battery would be losing voltage while the XJ sat. I would check that your battery terminals are clean and use a terminal brush JIC. If you don't have one, they're really cheap and very useful. Then check that the wires going to the battery have a good connection. I had bare stranded wires going into the connectors and it was causing an intermittent complete loss of power. I added a couple eye terminals and my problems disappeared. If all of that checks out, it's pretty likely that you have a ground issue. Start checking the major grounds and let us know what you find out.
