Default somebody help me

My fuel gague in the last week has been going haywire, and going up way past the full mark, then back down to where it should be, and then just going wherever. I'm pretty sure it is a short somewhere, but where would it be?
Now there is also an issue with my fuel cutting out. I will be driving, and the fuel will cut out for a second, and the car will idle down quick, but then come back to normal. At low idle speeds, It can kill the car completely. I have now noticed this only happens when the gauge goes on the fritz.
This happens completely randomly, and it drives me nuts and I need to fix it.
Maybe if someone could show me a wiring diagram for the fuel gauge and pump that would help.

if the engine is cutting out and your fuel guage is going crazy you might need a new pump.

Yeah I was thinking the pump too, but It seems weird that the gauge is freaking out, and that it is so random

The gage goes all the way up when it goes completely to ground. If you are also having fuel pump issues I would suggest pulling the sending unit out of the tank and checking out the resistor on the float assembly.

Thanks for the replies. Is the float getting knocked off or whatever common. I mean it will read accuratley sometimes, but then just go wherever other times. How long would a fuel pump replacement take me? Looks like I'll be paying $170 for a new one.
You have to drop the tank, I know that. Is it a hard job or fairly easy?

It's an easy job

They have the whole set up at autozone for under 150.

Thanks for the replies guys. Haven't been on recentley, but I found out, my cps wire was touching the exhaust manifold, because when we got a new one, the wire was way longer than the original one. So I replaced it with a shorter wired one, and no more cutting out.

BUTT,, I am still having issues with the fuel gauge reading accurately. It hasn't been going all the way up, but it still moves around funny.
